Getting Started with Brightspace
What Instructors Should Know
1. The Course Admin tab contains links to all the major course tools, including those present in other sections on Brightspace. If you have trouble locating resources or items in other parts of Brightspace, the Course Admin page is a hub location for all the tools you need for your course.
2. Intelligent Agents is a feature that sends an automated email when instructor-defined criteria are met. Instructors can set Intelligent Agents to run automatically and manually.
3. Using Announcements, with this feature you can create announcements to communicate course updates, changes, and new information to students quickly and effectively.
4. Modules: Organize course content like folders on a computer by time frame (e.g., Week 1),by topic (e.g., Cellular Biology), or by course components (e.g., Final Project).
5. Categories: Organize your assignments into categories to make it easier for users to navigate. While modules are used for organization in content, categories can be created in assignments, quizzes, and grades to organize items.
6. Discussions can be used to encourage students to share thoughts with their peers. You can setup discussion topics organized under forums for students to ask questions, discuss course content and assignments, and work together in assigned groups.
7. Quick Eval is the one-stop-shop grading solution. This tool helps you view and sort submissions that are awaiting evaluation. Submissions made to assignments, quizzes, and discussions are displayed in a list that can be selected to take you directly to their assessment page. Once you complete an evaluation, publish your feedback, or save it as a draft, you can return to the Quick Eval list to continue evaluating.
8. Visibility, most items are invisible until you make them visible to students (you can do so by clicking on the "eye" icon).
9. The Class Progress Tab gives you an overview of how students are progressing in your class, including the content they have completed, their current course objectives, and grades.
10. Brightspace Pulse, helps students receive critical course notifications, unify their calendars, and see their grades. In one simple app, students can look at their courses and have what they need to manage their study time, priorities, and workload. Encourage students to download the app!
