Course Description in college catalog:

This course is designed to introduce students to the principles and practices of public health and strategies used in public health promotion and disease prevention initiatives. The course will provide students with an opportunity to learn about past, present and future key public health topics of importance, and to apply public health strategies to prevent or minimize these problems among culturally diverse populations across the lifespan.

HE 114 is a free elective in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Dance.

Course-specific student learning outcomes:

  1. Students will be able to define the philosophy of public health.

  2. Students will be able to identify core public health concepts and values.

  3. Students will be able to describe the history of public health.

  4. Students will be able to identify key concepts in population health.

  5. Students will be able to identify databases for public health education and information.

  6. Students will be able to describe basic methods accessing databases for public health practice.

  7. Students will be able to describe the socio-economic, behavioral, biological and environmental impacts on human health and health disparities.

  8. Students will be able to describe the social and global functions of public health.

  9. Students will be able to describe key characteristics of the US health system.

  10. Students will be able to describe key characteristics of public health administration.

  11. Students will be able to describe the role of health promotion and health protection in public health.

  12. Students will be able to describe evidence-based approaches for using public health data in intervention and policy design.

  13. Students will be able to identify a variety of intervention methods to address the needs, strengths and capacity of various populations.

  14. Students will be able to identify social, political and economic public health challenges in the 21st century.

  15. Students will be able to identify public health workforce challenges in the 21st century.

  1. Analyze public health theory and practice in the following areas: social and behavioral sciences, epidemiology, environmental health, health communication, health care systems and policy.

  2. Apply and synthesize basic quantitative and qualitative data, professional and scholarly literature.

  3. Analyze and evaluate the biological principles associated with the distribution of infectious and non-infectious diseases of public health importance

  4. Examine the current research related to public health problems and formulate methods for the prevention and control of diseases

  5. Evaluate the role of social justice in bringing about social change to improve the health of the public

  6. Communicate, promote and advocate for improvements in the health of the public
