Liberal Arts and Sciences - Associate in Arts degree (AA) - Physical Education

Overview

Physical Education is a multidisciplinary concentration for students to learn about the current issues and philosophies of the profession and to promote physical activity and sport. Students will observe Physical Education teaching and organization in the field, demonstrate an understanding of lesson planning, content assessment and practice teaching.

This degree program with a concentration in Physical Education will prepare students to transfer to a 4-year college or university Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program, most specifically:  Queens College, Brooklyn College, York College, Hofstra University and Adelphi University.

Physical Education Concentration

To complete a concentration in Physical Education, students must complete the major requirements below:

  • Two Foreign Language courses (two sequential courses are required, level and sequence to be determined by department placement)
  • HI-110 or HI-111 or HI-112 (if already taken in common core, one course from HI-100 series is required; if two History courses have been taken in common core, one additional course from Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology  is required)
  • SP-211 (if already taken in common core, one course from HI-100 series is required; if two History courses have been taken in common core, one additional course from PSYC 100 series is required)
  • One English course from EN-200, EN-300 or EN-400 series
  • One science laboratory course (students who take STEM variant in common core have satisfied this requirement)

8-9 Credits

  • PE 815 Foundation in Physical Education (3 cr.)
  • PE 540 Introduction to Physical Fitness (1 cr.)
  • HE 110 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (1 cr.)

Choose from:

  • 3-4 courses from PE 400, PE 500 series, or DAN 100 (3-4cr.)
