June 2025 ~ QCC STEP Alumni Spotlight!!

Dr. Dawn A. Henderson earned her Ph.D. in English with a focus on African American literature in Spring 2025. She was introduced to the STEP program during her freshman year of high school in 2006 and spent all four years in the program, which laid the foundation for her academic journey. From 2014 to 2015, she worked as a writing center tutor and writing instructor at Queensborough Community College while completing her Master of Science in Adolescent Education.

Her research explores the intersections of race, gender, and power within Black life writing and carceral narratives, with particular attention to Black women’s autobiographies. Dr. Henderson is committed to abolitionist pedagogy and the transformative possibilities of storytelling within and beyond the academy.

No matter where her scholarship or academic pursuits take her, she remains dedicated to QCC and the STEP program, both of which were foundational to her understanding of scholarly research, conference presenting, and academic collaboration. The deep and lasting support she shares with the STEP program and its community is a lifelong bond she continues to cherish.
