What activities are offered at QCC’s STEP program?

Science Workshops: include general science, living environment, chemistry, and physics. Workshops provide hands-on activities as well as a review of subjects covered in school.

Math Workshops: include general math, algebra I, algebra II/trigonometry, geometry, pre-calculus. Students are encouraged to bring homework/assignments from school.

Machine Learning & Data Science Workshop: This introduction to Python will kick start your learning of Python for data science, as well as programming in general. This beginner-friendly Python course will take you from zero to programming in Python in a matter of hours. Upon its completion, you'll be able to write your own Python scripts and perform basic hands-on data analysis using our Jupyter-based lab environment. If you want to learn Python from scratch, this course is for you. This course will not teach you everything about Python, but it should give you the tools to work as a data scientist and enough knowledge to continue to expand your Python learning. In the final project, you will load data and learn a new Python Library on your own.

3D Design & Printing: Learn how to visualize conceptual objects and make them a reality using 3D printing software. Students will replicate designs to familiarize themselves with the software then move onto using their creativity to modify and improve upon these designs. This workshop will conclude in the QCC state of the art 3D printing lab where students will have the opportunity to create completely new objects of their own and bring them into the world through 3D printing.

Standardized Test preparation: students are offered extensive preparation for Regents, SAT, and SHSAT exams.

College guidance: Help with the college application process, including choosing schools, essay writing, and assistance with the online common application.

Research opportunities: STEP students have the opportunity to work with a QCC faculty mentor on their own research project. They may present their work at conferences and at other events throughout the year.

Queensborough Community College Talk & Tours: Students and their families will be invited to QCC campus to tour our facilities and learn about different degree programs available on the QCC campus. Students will speak with professors in the field and college students currently enrolled the program of focus for that day. Each tour will conclude with refreshments being served during an open Q&A forum where professors and current college students will answer any questions that STEP students and their families have.

Regional Conference: Annual Brooklyn-Queens-Staten Island conference where students participate in many activities with STEP students from other programs.

Parent involvement: Parents participate in activities such as STEM Career Day, meeting with a college advisor, and STEP Recognition Day.

Annual Field Trip: Past trips include: NY Hall of Science, Queens Zoo, Long Island Aquarium…
