Major(s): All Majors

INTRODUCTION: The 2018 NYPIRG Youth Civic Engagement Fellowship program begins Monday, January 29th in NYPIRG's main office at 9 Murray Street in Manhattan. Fellows are required to make a commitment of twenty hours a week to the program. Stipends are available for each fellow selected for the program.

PROGRAM: Fellows will be chosen for the program through a competitive selection process based on several criteria, including academic preparation and achievement, volunteer or work experience, and a personal interview. Applicants need not have previous NYPIRG experience. Fellowship training will begin with an orientation on the New York City and State legislative processes, NYPIRG's issues, civic engagement techniques, and leadership skills. Individual conferences and group meetings will be conducted regularly to clarify goals and objectives. Each intern must research and track one or two public policy issue areas as his/her primary responsibility, each intern is also assigned a broad issue area in which to track relevant legislation, and will engage their peers in civic engagement activities on their college campuses.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Assigned issue areas attempt to take into account students' experience, abilities and interests. Each assignment demands a variety of responsibilities. Fellows who are selected for the program will:

  • Learn the ins and outs of New York City policymaking, including the New York Council, city agencies, and community boards.
  • Gain an understanding of New York State policymaking, with a particular focus on money and decision-making power struggles between the city and state that impacts New York City residents – for example, funding for mass transit.
  • Participate in advanced workshops to learn advanced activism and public organizing skills – workshops and discussions would be based on real-world issues, focusing on problem solving and practical, tangible actions.
  • Conduct research on current local, and in some cases, national political issues.
  • Participate in – and in some cases organize – events and activities on their college campus that provide their peers with opportunities to engage in high quality civic experiences – such as voter registration, activist seminars, policy debates, or local actions.
  • Follow the New York City budget process, attend and participate in public hearings, and meet with councilmembers.
  • Attend and possibly present at community board meetings.
  • Be assigned a particular issue area to focus on during the course of the fellowship – researching the issue in depth, participating in public actions surrounding the issue, conducting community education, and drafting a policy paper focusing on a particular problem with proposed solutions.

EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT: Workshops, seminars, discussion groups, and reading and writing assignments are provided throughout the program. They feature NYPIRG legislative and issue experts, as well as councilmembers, their aides and leaders of other public interest groups. Workshop topics include the following and more: Overview of NYPIRG's Legislative Agenda; Public Interest Lobbies; Structure and Function of the New York City Council; How a Bill Becomes a Law; Mass Media in New York City; the Politics of New York City; Time Planning; Legal Research; Public Speaking and Coalition Building.

ACADEMIC CREDIT: Fellows will receive academic credit for the fellowship. Fellows are responsible for securing this credit themselves, via independent study or the equivalent, but NYPIRG can provide you with relevant information about the program to share with professors or internship coordinators.

REQUIRED READING: Required readings will be assigned to give each fellow a broad perspective on New York City politics and current issues. Fellows will be required to supplement this list by reading the daily papers and other relevant news stories.

EVALUATIONS: Overall fellowship performance is assessed by the Youth Civic Engagement Coordinator. Campus faculty advisor(s) will receive a final evaluation that summarizes the quality of each Fellow’s performance in all areas of the Fellowship, including academic, written, and community organizing.

The Fellowship begins on January 29th, 2018. The Fellowship runs concurrent with the legislative calendar and ends at the end of the academic semester. Applications should be emailed to civicinternship@nypirg.org by the end of the day, January 8th, 2018.
