Honors and Awards

The Department of Social Sciences has several honors and awards that are given every year. Click on the award name to get more information about the award (candidacy criteria, background, and value).

Dr. Hong Memorial Award

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  • Matriculated in an A.A. or A.S. program.
  • Completed 24 credits.
  • Completed 6 credits in courses offered by the Social Science Department.
  • Minimum GPA in courses applied to satisfy the degree requirements of 3.7.
  • Returning to QCC in the Fall semester to complete at least two more semester of studies including one more course offered by the Social Science Department.

Each candidate must:

  • Certify that they are planning to return for two more semesters.
  • Submit an essay describing their educational history and future academic and vocational plans.
  • Undergo an interview with members of the Scholarship Committee of the Department-DCSF in order to ascertain that they have met all the criteria stated above.

At the time of the announcement, the winning candidate will have:

  • The highest number of credits in courses offered by the Social Science Department.
  • The highest overall GPA.
  • The highest GPA in courses offered by the Social Science Department.
  • The highest number of credits earned.

Dr. Naphtaly Levy Scholarship

Date Established: 1990

Purpose: To honor the memory of Naphtaly Levy.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  • A.A. or A.S. degree recipient with at least one course in Political Science and with the highest GPA.

Dr. Mary McDougal Memorial Fund

Date Established: 1979

Purpose: To honor the memory of Mary McDougal.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  • A.A. or A.S. degree recipient with at least one course in Economics and with the highest GPA.

Theresa P. Singer Scholarship

Scholarship Award Criteria:
The Theresa P. Singer Award will be distributed annually at the Honors Convocation in May to a student who fulfills the following criteria:

  • A graduating student achieving a GPA of 3.3 or higher in one of the following majors - selection based on a prioritized ranking order described below:

    1. Dual Joint Education Program with Queens College
    2. English
    3. History
    4. Business Administration
    5. Nursing
  • Student is a non-traditional, adult student and Queens County resident.

Dr. Vincent E Smith Award

Date Established: 1972

Purpose:

  • To honor the memory of Dr. Vincent E. Smith.
  • A scholarship for the student with outstanding record in Social Sciences.

Scholarship Award Criteria:

  • Student with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and at least 12 or more credits in Social Science courses.
  • Student must be graduating in current academic year.
  • 6 credits in any two of these Philosophy classes: 101,120,130,135,140,145,150,165,180
