Queensborough Community College Establishes Pathway to Academic and Professional Success Through Articulation Agreement With Winston-Salem State University
June 23, 2025 (Bayside, NY) - Queensborough Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY) has established an articulation agreement with Winston-Salem State University for Queensborough’s Music Production and Psychology majors. The articulation agreement enables Queensborough students to seamlessly transfer after completing their associate degree, providing them with a clear pathway to earn a bachelor's degree at a prestigious Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
The articulation agreement will guarantee admission for Queensborough graduates who meet specific criteria, including a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. For the Music Production major, Winston Salem State University has a Music Educator preparation program, where students must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 throughout the entire program. The partnership ensures that prior coursework will be accepted, facilitating a smooth transition for students as they move toward their academic and career goals.
Jamal Biggs, Student Life Director of Queensborough’s Male Resource Center (MRC), who spearheaded the agreement, noted that Queensborough’s Provost Phyllis Curtis-Tweed, Ph.D. and Michael Pullin, Ph.D., Dean for Academic Initiatives were instrumental in bringing this agreement to fruition. "Queensborough remains steadfast in its commitment to providing students with meaningful pathways to academic and professional success,” said Jamal. “This newly established articulation agreement exemplifies this mission by creating new opportunities for our students to seamlessly continue their education at a distinguished institution. This partnership not only supports their academic journey but also connects them to the rich history, culture, and legacy that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) proudly represent. Discussions within the Male Resource Center revealed a strong student desire for alternative opportunities to deepen their understanding of history and culture. Partnering with Winston-Salem State University brings that vision to life."
“When we visited Winston-Salem State, it was immediately clear that the university would be an excellent transfer destination for our students,” said Michael Pullin, Ph.D., Dean for Academic Initiatives at Queensborough. “The large amount of care and support they provide to their students is readily apparent. I am confident that our graduates will thrive there.”
While the Male Resource Center is designed to address systematic barriers that often prevent self-identified Black and Latino males from reaching degree completion, the Center welcomes all Queensborough students without regard to race, gender, national origin, and other characteristics. Services offered include leadership training, mentorship opportunities, academic tutoring, career counseling, specialized employment and internship opportunities, and community events. The Male Resource Center is a landmark achievement for Queensborough geared toward creating, positive, lifechanging differences for all students with transformational, inclusive, and equitable opportunities that will ensure academic success is strengthened by a sense of connection and belonging.
The Music Production associate in applied science (A.A.S.) program at Queensborough, the only one of its kind in CUNY, integrates music production and recording studio training that prepares students for jobs in the music and recording industries. Music Production classes are taught in the department's technology laboratories and multi-track recording studios. During their last semester of the curriculum, students have an opportunity to participate in the cooperative internship program, which allows them to work as apprentices in professional working environments. Though the A.A.S. degree in Music Production is designed as a career program, many students choose to transfer their credits to baccalaureate degree programs at four-year institutions both inside and outside of CUNY.
Queensborough’s Psychology program is designed for students with an interest in pursuing further baccalaureate studies in psychology and related fields, such as education, counseling, and social work. The A.S. degree course curriculum satisfies CUNY Pathways requirements and the American Psychological Association’s guidelines for the undergraduate psychology major, thus making it easier for students to transfer courses into baccalaureate programs.
