Steering Committee Report March 2022

Steering Committee thanks Marc Carpentier and VP Bill Faulkner for their work in consulting with the Senate Budget Advisement Committee regarding the current budget situation, and we thank committee chair Phil Pecorino for his work in preparing a report on it for the Senate, to be presented at the April Senate meeting. Budget challenges have been a part of formal campus conversation for months now, but to come together as a Senate and a community to renew our resolve to understand and meet the challenge ahead is a healthy thing to do. Faculty Governance Leaders have received regular budget updates and the State of the College Address also confronted the issue. We thank President Mangino and the Cabinet for their work in communicating the situation to the college. We look forward to furthering the conversation in April.

Senator Rezan Akpinar volunteered at the February Senate meeting to serve as Senate Technology Officer through May. Thank you, Rezan for your commitment to service to the Senate and the college.

The Senate Standing Committee selection process is underway and a ballot of committee rosters will be considered at the April Senate meeting. We thank all those who have volunteered to serve on a committee. It is worth repeating here that Christine Mooney, chair, and Julian Stark, secretary of the Committee on Committees have done extraordinary work in updating the needed databases to ensure that all eligible instructional staff members receive an invitation to serve. Problems in database accuracy persisted this semester, and both Christine and Julian deserve our thanks. We also thank Raj Vaswani, whose commitment to service and excellence in what he does provided the framework for the updating.

Faculty-Member-at-Large and CLT Senate seat nominee signatures have been submitted and nominees for open seats will be notified presently. We thank potential nominees for offering to serve.

Senators, please monitor your email for a survey to be sent from Academic Senate Steering Committee email, which will attempt to assess Senate effectiveness. The survey will be sent by March 15th.

It is easy to observe enthusiasm in our colleagues as we all go about the business of educating our students – we are confident that we will continue to see our support for each other grow as we rise to meet the challenges ahead.
