**The Chai Ho and F.Y. The Jackson and Muriel Lum Endowment Scholarship awardees are likewise recommended by a committee of Engineering Technology department members, who then send to the Awards and Scholarship committee for review, who then make recommendations.

  1. Continuing Student Academic Merit Scholarship

This scholarship is given to current and continuing students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance (a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 required). In the Fall 2022 semester 1 student was awarded $1,000, and 8 students awarded smaller amounts ranging from $57 to $901. In the Spring 2023 semester awards of $1,000 each were given to 22 students (new applicants as well as Fall 2022 applicants qualifying for continued funding in the Spring 2023), and 7 awards ranging from $146 to $805. The QCC Merit winners are awarded a variety of "named scholarships" that represent the pool of funds that have been donated to the college and are available to award via the QCC Merit program.  You will find that some students are receiving more than one "named" award, which is listed alongside the student’s name below.

Essay Description:

Awards and Scholarship Committee

Queensborough Community College

Bayside, NY 11364

To Selection Committee,

My name is John Smith and I am a second semester student, majoring in Theater Arts, at Queensborough Community College. My high academic standing, service to the community, and theatrical accomplishments make me the ideal candidate to receive this award. I am writing this letter to express my interest in receiving the Academic Merit Scholarship for Spring 2022. This award will eliminate financial hardship and will be important to my future academic success.

I currently volunteer as an afterschool tutor at The School for Success, the middle school I attended, and I serve as a mentor to young men from my community church. In addition, I am a member of the ABC Theatre company where we create, develop and present local theatrical productions. This experience has not only provided insight into what it takes to put on a theatrical production from the front of the stage, but also from the backstage. It too has allowed me to visualize what my future could look like. Looking forward, I see my future is bright, and this award will allow me to pursue my goals and dreams.

I aspire to be an actor. Unfortunately, at this time of my college career, my family is experiencing financial hardship. The scholarship will be very useful because it will allow me to continue my study in theater arts without the financial problems that would have prevented me from continuing at Queensborough. Please be assured, I will not disappoint the Awards and Scholarship Committee and the decision to award me the scholarship.

Sincerely,

John Smith

Committee recommendations for upcoming year

Challenges

  1. A large number of the fall 2023 application essays for the Academic Merit scholarship were written by AI rather than students. This is an unprecedented problem that we need to address in the coming year.
  2. The window for application review is very small and aligns with finals week, which makes it difficult to assess 100+ applications for all members.

Recommendations / To Do

  1. Consider how to address AI-generated application essays.

Individual member contributions and thanks

Acknowledgements

Thank you to all members for their time and commitment to the work of the committee. This was my first year as chair, and my fellow committee members made the new responsibilities much easier.

Ryan Brannon served as secretary of the committee. Ryan was a dutiful secretary, recording all meetings, providing useful input on all application reviews, and being a helpful colleague all around.

Ewa Stelmach helped to make the transition to chair smooth. Ewa stepped down before completing full service on the committee to help with the new responsibilities. But Ewa went beyond, guiding the new chair through the process throughout the year.

We would like to acknowledge the outgoing members Ewa Stelmach and Benjamin Miller for their productive service on the committee over the years. Their timely applicant reviews and valuable input will be missed.

We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of new committee members Keba Sylla and Christine Pagano. They joined during the busy and overwhelming spring semester application review but excelled.

Ari Fulton and Stephen Atkins resigned in the fall semester due to demands in their teaching/administrative roles conflicting with the tight deadlines for scholarship application review. We appreciate their work on the committee over the years and the respect they afforded the committee when it was time to review the applications.

The committee would like to give special thanks to Veronica Lukas for keeping the committee abreast of all scholarship updates and helping the chair navigate the application review process. Thank you to the staff, Sophia Mackey and Michele McLoughlin, for creating new accounts for new members and sharing students’ applications digitally on a rolling basis via Teams, which helps to evaluate the applicants in a timely matter.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tim Keogh, chair (History
