Steering Committee May 2025
The Steering Committee wishes to thank our outgoing Senators and members of FGL and Standing Committees for their vital service in faculty governance over the past three years. Your efforts have greatly helped in continuing what has long been established at QCC as strong cooperative efforts among faculty, staff, and administrators in maintaining and improving a healthy workplace environment for colleagues and a positive and supportive learning environment for our students. We also welcome incoming Senators and Standing Committee members and look forward to working with you in the coming academic year!
As we approach the end of the Spring 2025 semester, the Steering Committee reflects on the important work of the Academic Senate in upholding our academic values. While it may seem like a small achievement that our Senate has maintained an atmosphere of mutual respect as we considered of a wide variety of issues affecting our campus, it is in fact a strong testament to our singular focus of working toward the betterment of our college and to have done so with a spirit of camaraderie and collegiality.
The May Academic Senate meeting includes nominations/elections for all Steering Committee positions. We wish to thank the Senate for the opportunity to have served the college in this way.
As the May Senate also includes nominations/elections for a total of three positions to serve on the Committee on Committees, we wish to thank the current CoC membership for their extremely efficient work throughout the academic year. Particularly in the areas of Standing Committee assignments and Senate elections, the CoC carried out these tasks smoothly and efficiently, having made great efforts to reach out to our colleagues to successfully fill all required Senate and Standing Committee positions for the 2025-26 academic year.
As stated in the April meeting, the Standing Committee recommends for the upcoming academic year a cooperative effort with the CoC in efforts to gather information and to ultimately compile a report for the Academic Senate concerning trends in participation in governance. To that end, the Steering Committee will propose the formation of a special committee related to these efforts so that we may include perspectives across campus related to this issue.
As a reminder to all Senators, May 2025 is the official start of the new senate term. Those senators whose terms end in 2025 are more than welcome and encouraged to attend; however, only Senators whose terms continue through the next academic year should be voting at the May meeting.
As for Standing Committees, all committees should hold a meeting in May including newly-appointment committee members for next academic year. During this meeting, Chair and Secretary positions should be chosen via an election within each committee. Any committee members whose terms end this semester may certainly attend. However, only committee members who will be serving in Fall 2025 may vote for Chair and Secretary. Additionally, there should be a total of two officers elected within each committee: one Chair; and one Secretary. After officer elections, please be sure to update Standing Committee websites with new membership rosters. Lastly, a reminder that Annual Reports must be published on committee websites by May 29, the date of commencement. Please reach out to the Steering Committee for any questions and we will be happy to assist.
The Steering Committee wishes to congratulate our May 2025 graduates, for which the list of candidates will be presented for Senate vote. We are very proud of our graduating students!
