Steering Committee December 2024

The Special Committee on AI has gained two more faculty members, bringing the total number to 5. The committee will move ahead with its charge of managing the AI book club. The Steering Committee thanks those faculty members who volunteered and is happy to assist as the special committee moves forward.

As the FEC noted that the last audit of faculty Bylaws was conducted in 2012, they reached out to the Bylaws Committee as part of those efforts for a 2024-25 audit. We thank the Bylaws Committee for preparing an updated template for Bylaws revision requests, which will greatly streamline those efforts. The Steering Committee is sharing this document in the December 10, 2024 Academic Senate Agenda, on the Academic Steering Committee webpage, and with all Standing Committee Chairs. The Steering Committee prefers that going forward this template be utilized for any Academic Senate Bylaws or Standing Committee charges revision proposals. As a reminder, all proposed changes to the Bylaws should be submitted to the Bylaws Committee.

On a related note, the Steering Committee is in the process of drafting proposed amendments to the Academic Senate Bylaws pertaining to Standing Committee elections and submission of annual reports. It is expected that a proposal document will be ready for consideration by the May 2025 Academic Senate meeting.

As the Fall 2024 semester draws to a close and final exams are on the horizon, the Steering Committee wishes to thank all faculty, staff, and administrators for our collaborative efforts, and we hope that you will all have a productive end of semester and will enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season and new year. We look forward to continuing our work together in 2025. When we convene in February, the Steering Committee will update the Senate on our joint efforts with the Committee on Committees in managing Senate elections and Standing Committee appointments.
