Steering Committee April 2025

The Steering Committee wishes to thank the Committee on Committees for their effort in administering Academic Senate elections. We are happy to report that although the original nomination list included only 9 candidates to fill 14 vacancies for next academic year, after an extended nomination period and great effort on the part of the Committee on Committees in encouraging our colleagues to participate there were 16 candidates on the ballot. With the results of the election available by April 6, the Steering Committee expects we can have those results shared with the Academic Senate at the April 8 meeting.

The Committee on Committees monthly report includes the AY 2025-26 rosters for all Standing Committees. While all seats in all committees were successfully filled, the CoC reported a shortage of alternates should vacancies arise during the academic year. If you or your colleagues are interested in being added to the alternates list, you are encouraged to contact the Committee on Committees.

The difficulties in populating Senate and Standing Committee seats this Spring is evident in both the relatively low number of email responses to calls for Standing Committee participation and the need for deadline extensions in order to fill Senate seats. This issue is one the Steering Committee feels should receive more attention so that the Academic Senate may better understand the scope of the issue and whether it feels any action should be taken in an effort to encourage higher rates of faculty participation in Senate and Standing Committee-related service. The Steering Committee will work with the Committee on Committees to gather relevant information for the Academic Senate on the subject so that a conversation about the issue can move forward. With the Steering Committee and Committee on Committee elections taking place during the May Academic Senate, we will encourage incoming members of both committees to continue efforts made toward this goal by that time.

The Committee on WID/WAC is engaging in efforts to encourage faculty to re-certify as WI instructors and has sent approx. 200 emails to faculty. For faculty who are currently teaching WI courses or intend to do so in the future, we highly encourage you to re-certify if you have received this email requesting re-certification. The process is simple, and these efforts speak to our ongoing commitment as a institution in supporting the implementation of the WI High Impact Practice.

Because of a schedule conflict, the dates for two meetings offered to Standing Committees to support Chairs in preparation of Annual Reports has been moved to April 9 and April 23. As a reminder, Standing Committee Annual Reports must be published online by May 29, the day of Commencement.
