Program Revisions (7 program revisions)
Seven program revisions are listed below by department. The date of committee approval is indicated in parentheses. Some details are given below; further information can be found in the Committee on Curriculum minutes for that date and the monthly report sent to the following Academic Senate meeting.
- Department of Biological Sciences & Geology
Biology (A.S.) (12/3/2024)
Rationale:
We are adding the option of taking organic chemistry and college physics as elective courses because many of the B.A. and B.S. Biology programs at the CUNY Senior Colleges require those courses. To make room for additional credits of electives, the Health and Physical Education requirements have been removed. These changes will allow QCC Biology students to be better prepared for transfer.
CH-251, CH-252, PH-301, and PH-302 have been added as major electives. The requirements for HE-101 or HE-102 and one course from DAN-100, PE-400, or PE-500 have been deleted. MA-119, MA-121, and MA-440 have been moved from Additional Coursework to Major Electives.
A.S. in Health Sciences (4/29/25)
Rationale:
A course (HE-115) needed to be added into the General Health Sciences concentration to satisfy developing articulations with four-year colleges.
- Department of Chemistry
Chemistry (A.S.) (3/18/2025)
Rationale:
This degree was initially designed to prepare students for the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at York College. However, the degree did not allow students to take physics, a required course at York, and for most B.S. in Chemistry degrees. Additionally, the program did not allow students with an incoming math placement less than Calculus I to count College Algebra, Trigonometry, or Pre-Calculus credits toward the degree. The proposed changes below address both of those problems.
Major electives have been added to the degree. BI-202 has been moved from Major Requirements to the Electives, and PH-421 and PH-422 have been added to the degree as electives. HE-102 and the three credits of foreign language or liberal arts and sciences have been eliminated in favor of free electives so that students with an incoming math placement below MA-441 may count some of the credits for MA-119, MA-121, and/or MA-440 toward the degree program.
- Department of Communication, Theatre, & Media Production
LA-AA Liberal Arts and Sciences (10/29/24)
Rationale:
Since the inception of the Communication Studies concentration in 2017-2018, the number of speech courses offered by our department have increased as well as the number of students interested in the different branches of the communication studies field.
While there is only one concentration in communication studies, we have added recommended courses for three areas: Communication Studies (for students who want to gain an overall knowledge of the communication studies field), Communication Science and Disorders (a scientific track for students who want to take prerequisite courses for a B.S. in Speech and Language Pathology or related program), and Multi-Media Communications (for students who want to master business communication skills and apply them in the Electronic Media field).
- Department of Health, Physical Education and Dance
LA-AA - Liberal Arts and Sciences (4/29/2025)
Rationale:
The revision is to add a new course, HE 115 Food and Culture as a major elective for the Nutrition Concentration in LA-AA degree program. HE 115 is equivalent to Queens' College's FNES 104, which is part of the BS Nutrition and Dietetics major, BS Food Management Studies and BS Nutrition and Exercise Science. HE 115 is equivalent to NFS 33200: Cultural Aspects of Food and Nutrition is part of the BS Public Health major at Hunter College.
A.S. in Movement Science (4/29/2025)
Rationale:
The revision is to add a new course, HE 115 Food and Culture as a major elective for the AS in Movement Science degree program. This course is equivalent to Queens' College's FNES 104, which is part of the BS Nutrition and Exercise Science major.
A.S. in Public Health (4/29/2025)
Rationale:
The revision is to add a new course, HE 115 Food and Culture as a major elective for the AS Public Health degree program. HE 115 is equivalent to NFS 33200: Cultural Aspects of Food and Nutrition which is part of the BS Public Health major at Hunter College and will be included in the articulation agreement between QCC AS Public Health and Hunter College’s BS Public Health.
