Department Name Change: department approval: February 14th, 2024

To change the name of the Foreign Languages and Literatures to the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures voted on February 14, 2024, to change its name to the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. The reason for this change is that we agree that currently the term "foreign" not only carries connotations of "otherness" or "outsider," but also has political and social implications, especially in the context of immigration, and tends to be used to reinforce cultural stereotypes.
