The Academic Senate Committee on Committee on Food Insecurity of the Academic Senate met on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 1 - 2 P.M. Room MA-356


Committee Members in Attendance:

Lorraine Cupelli (Chair), Sara Danzi Engoron (Secretary), Weier Ye, Emily Tai, Philip Nelan, Ashlie Klepper, Howard Sporn, Leah Anderst (new member)

Business:

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 PM

 

Business: 

  1. The November minutes were approved with two corrections.
  2. The pantry served 2,049 students between January and April this year.
  3. April 16th was planting day. Angela Gmuca, Lorraine Cupelli and Sara Danzi Engoron planted herbs and tomatoes in planters outside the 3rd floor of Administration.
  4. Suggestions to find and post more recipes using pantry ingredients for students, and to post information about availability of planted herbs and tomatoes for student use.
  5. Student Celebration Fair took place on April 17th on the Quad. Fair was developed and organized by Lorraine Cupelli. Recognition to Angela Gmuca for contacting Farmer’s Fridge to donate many ready-to-eat donations. Sara Danzi Engoron, Angela Gmuca, Weier Ye and a PTK student volunteered as well as Sharon Winston at CFI table and Tabitha Ortiz at the NYPIRG table. Thank you to all who contributed to make the fair at great success. Activities included:12 faculty, approx. over 100 students presented and over 150 students attended
  6. Included 10-12 on and off campus departments and organizations for student services – Woman kind denim, distribution of cards, QR codes for ARC, mental health, nutrition, and stress reduction
  7. Ronni Weprin reported that Student Affairs would do food Grab and Go food items for students and on 5/20 and 5/21 there would be hot breakfast available for students in Science Atrium coordinated by Brian Mitra.
  8. Summer pantry hours – requested that volunteers email Lorraine Cupelli if available. Schedule to be posted.
  9. Ideas for fall discussed. ARC not well known by students, students like snacks (protein bars) – can ask for donations, ethnic food availability, using QR code for feedback from students, add more breakfast items to pantry, refrigerator with yogurt possibility
  10. Elections for next year – Lorraine Cupelli and Sara Danzi Engoron volunteered to continue in their roles of Chair and Secretary, respectively, with no opposition.
  11. The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 PM.
