The Academic Senate Committee on Committee on Course & Standings met on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in Room # A-104


Committee Members in Attendance:

Business:

The meeting was called to order at March 1, 2019 at 10:00 a.m

  • Looked over minutes from last meeting
  • Split into 2 groups to look over appeals
  • Dan briefed about Forgiveness Policy and Change of grade policy
    • Hope to bring to Academic Senate in April
    • Wording is not finalized
    • Committee backs a Fresh Start program—not necessarily all the wording included in the presented document
    • 2 year time limit for change of grades
    • Committee will continue to look at appeals older than 2 years and recommend some to be sent to the Provost for approval
    • Question about mental health appeals which will continue to go to Counseling
    • Committee agrees Dan can look at mental health appeals as they come in

Fresh Start: hope to be in effect by Spring 2020

  • No limit on the number of transfer credits that students can come in with
  • If GPA falls below a 2.0 within this program, the student will be dismissed
  • Question if student can appeal a grade while in the Fresh Start program? Yes
  • Recommended different wording to “student will be readmitted to one department” –suggest changing to “program”
  • Question about whether a Director from Counseling or Health Services should be involved in the Fresh Start admission process
  • Advisement should be involved to review prerequisites a student has that may no longer be used in a particular department (i.e. MA 5 vs MA 10)
    • The department can get involved to evaluate equivalency

Next meeting: Friday, April 12 at 10 am

The Committee also was able to review many retroactive withdrawal appeals. The results of these appeals are below.
