*Includes applications not reviewed by the committee.

See Appendix 1 for data on all Awards and Scholarships offered by the college during 2019-2020

Accomplishments

  1. The committee reviewed 244 Continuing Academic Merit Scholarship applications, compared with 169 reviewed in the previous year. We had 151 students receive a merit scholarship, up from 147 students in the previous year.
  2. The list of final recipients of awards was received in digital format by the chair on June 21st from Charles Petz, Database Manager, Office of Institutional Advancement.
  3. The committee is again able to report on all of the awards and scholarships offered by the college and their dollar amounts (see Appendix 1). The data was obtained from Charles Petz.
  4. The chairperson of the committee received the list of final recipients of awards in a timely manner to complete the annual report on time.
  5. On October 28th, 2020, and March 17th, 2021, Ewa Stelmach attended the meeting of the Chairs and Secretaries hosted by the Academic Senate Steering Committee. Among other things, during the meetings, she received hands-on Cascade training, learned about the new General Committee Guide, and was informed to complete the assessment form for the committee.
  6. The committee completed the Assessment Form for the Committee.
  7. Committee has discussed the possibility of creating new awards and at the moment the idea does not seem to be possible to accomplish. In the future, if there is an opportunity to create new institutional awards, the committee will pursue it. Each department has its own power of creating departmental awards and the College Awards and Scholarship committee does not oversee this process.
  8. The announcement for Spring 2021 Continuing Student Academic Merit Scholarship included the new updated essay description.
  9. During the December and May meetings Veronica Lukas shared files with the committee through Microsoft Teams. This saved a lot of paper and ink and well as tedious work for the staff as well as allowed the committee members to have immediate access to the files.

Committee Responses towards Steering Committee Charges

  1. From previous charges - -not sure if still applicable - Report on status of “Who’s Who”. Report on progress of previous challenges regarding low applicant count and incomplete applications. -Completed- Who’s Who is not accepting nominations.
  2. Report on the C.A.R.E.S. award recently created and announced by President Mangino.-Completed-The The CARES award is out of the scope of the ACS as it is only for Faculty and Staff and not students.
  3. Review and contribute, as needed and in consultation with the Steering Committee, the new committee guide soon to be distributed (at the Chairs meeting). - In Progress-Committee is now in the process of reviewing the General Guide for All Standing committees and will soon begin working on creating an online addendum.
  4. Continue to maintain Committee agendae, minutes and documentation on the Queensborough Governance website. -Completed-All current committee’s documents are posted.

Challenges

  1. Getting all members of the committee to attend meetings and submit their voting results in a timely matter.
  2. While we have noticed better quality of essays after the revisions to the essay description have been made, the committee still believes the essays content submitted by some students is weak. Due to the fact that some committee members have a difficult time with the evaluation of essays, the committee will meet to discuss the essays evaluation process next semester.

Recommendations / To Do

  1. The committee is in the process of reviewing the General Guide for All Standing Committees and will soon begin working on creating an online addendum.
  2. The committee will meet to discuss essay description for Academic Merit Scholarships and how to improve it to make the evaluation process more meaningful and worthwhile for the committee members.
  3. As part of the assessment, the committee sent the recommendations to the Steering Committee to suggest rewriting the wording of the bylaws as it does not quite represent what the committee does.
  4. Dates for advertising or soliciting applications and recommendations for awards and scholarships:
  • The Spring 2022 Continuing Student Academic Merit Scholarships need to be advertised early in the Fall 2021 semester. Ideally, the committee should meet in December 2021 to vote on these.
  • The Fall 2022 Continuing Academic Merit Scholarships and Special Awards need to be advertised in April 2022. Ideally, the committee should meet in May 2022 to vote on both of these.

Acknowledgements

Thank you to all members for their time and commitment to the work of the committee.

Sujin Wei continued to serve as a secretary of the committee. He has attended all the meetings of the committee and continues to provide valuable feedback and greatly contributes to the discussions of candidates. Benjamin Miller has also attended all of the meetings of the committee and continues to be the key contributor in evaluating and discussing essays and students’ applications. The committee noticed that the new essay description initiated by Benjamin Miller and Wei Lai resulted in better quality essays submitted by students. Wei Lai continues to be thorough in her evaluations of applicants and actively participates during the committee discussions. During the last academic year Alfred McDonald was unable to join the three committee meetings held by the committee and has not submitted his voting results. Marry Ann Rose did not attend two of the three meetings held by the committee but was able to provide her voting results. Due to the conflict with her responsibilities as a coordinator within the Nursing Department, Marry Ann resigned from the committee.

The committee would like to give special thanks to Veronica Lukas for her invaluable feedback and guidance and her staff for their work throughout the year by advertising the awards, compiling all the applications for review, and sharing the applications with the committee digitally. Digital access to the files helps with the access and evaluation.

Having two new incoming members, one member who did not attend the meetings, one member resigning and two outgoing members, Sujin Wei and Benjamin Miller, both with a lot of experience on the committee, leaves the committee with a majority of its members not being experienced in evaluating applicants. Thus, Benjamin Miller offered to continue on the committee for another academic year and his term was extended by the Committee on Committee.

We would like to acknowledge the outgoing member Sujun Wei for his outstanding service on this committee as a secretary.
