Updates on College Awards and Scholarships Committee Website

Discussion

Some of the committee’s previous and current annual reports and minutes are not ADA compliant. Thus, they have not been posted on the committee’s website yet. During the summer, Ewa Stelmach and Sujun Wei attended the meeting hosted by the Academic Senate Steering Committee during which they received hands-on Cascade training for uploading committee reports. Since the Awards and Scholarship Committee Annual report contains tables, more work is needed to format the Annual Report before it can be posted onto the college website.

Decision

Ewa Stelmach has initiated contact with QCC Director of Web Services David Moretti and will follow up on this important issue in Spring 2020. Sujun Wei volunteered to join her in meeting David Moretti.

Updates on Merits Scholarship Application Description

Discussion

Benjamin Miller and Wei Lai raised the question about the inconsistent quality of students’ application essays.

Decision

Benjamin Miller and Wei Lai will work on the new description of Merits Scholarship Application to guide our students to improve their writing.

Review of Merit Scholarship Applications

Discussion

The committee members had reviewed all the applications prior to the meeting. Ewa Stelmach briefly reminded the members the evaluation criteria. The Academic Merit Scholarship is given to all continuing students who have a minimum 3.25 GPA, completed 24 QCC credits, and also registered for the upcoming semesters with 15 credits, unless the student is a Nursing major or the student has accumulated 60 credits by that point. The committee members compared choices for all the applications one by one.

Decision

As for Merit Scholarship, there were 86 applications in total. 51 applications were accepted. 31 applications were voted as “Yes Pending”. 4 applications were rejected.

Respectfully submitted,

Sujun Wei
Committee on Awards and Scholarships, Secretary
