Biography: Kahlil Newell Garner received his MFA degree in writing and directing film from Columbia College Chicago and got his start working in film post-production and Community Theater in New York City. He worked for several years as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at York College before coming to Queensborough Community College. Kahlil is a co-founder and former board Vice President of the Black TV & Film Collective, a community-based media arts education organization. While at the BTFC he developed courses, mentored filmmakers, and helped to organize an annual media conference. He is particularly interested in helping bring the voices and visions of underserved communities to the screen. Kahlil has written, directed, and produced both fiction and non-fiction films. He is the recipient of the Gold Award for Fiction Short for his short film Hush from the University Film and Video Association Conference 2020. In his recent work as a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow, Kahlil is producing and directing a documentary short focused on conservation, borders, and immigration all within a small community garden in South Jamaica, Queens.
