As a Faculty Fellow in the Office of Academic Affairs, Dr. Andrea Salis supports efforts of the Queensborough Academies including high impact activities and faculty use of early alert technology to enhance student success. Dr. Salis has led efforts to achieve the Advancing Underserved Student Success through Faculty Intentionality in Problem-Centered Learning Grant, funded by TG Philanthropy and part of AAC&U’s Making Excellence Inclusive initiative. She has also received grants from the National Education Association (NEA) and CUNY. Dr. Salis was a recipient of the CUNY Chancellor’s Award and selected for the CUNY Faculty Leadership Academy Training. Dr. Salis served on the steering committee for Queensborough’s reaccreditation with Middle States Commission in Higher Education. She also serves on the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE) task force to develop curricula and articulation models in Public Health.
Dr. Salis has over 12 years of experience as a faculty member of the Health, Physical Education and Dance Department. She earned her Ph.D. in Education Psychology with a concentration in Learning, Development and Instruction from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Dr. Salis has several pedagogical publications and presentations including: Use of Collaborative Assignments to Enhance Experiential Learning, The Effectiveness of Learning Communities on Students' Knowledge Acquisition and Perceived Self-Efficacy and Assessing Diverse Students’ Vocabulary Comprehension through Context Construction. She co-presented Facilitating Culturally Responsive Teaching: Design, Implementation and Assessment at the AAC&U Diversity, Learning and Student Success Conference. Dr. Salis serves on the Academic Senate and co-chairs the Senate Committee on Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness. She is an administrative liaison to the Senate Academic Development Committee; a member of Queensborough’s General Education Task Force and serves on the Queensborough Academies Strategic Planning Committee.
Dr. Salis’ research interests include academic assessment, applied teaching and learning strategies, health behavior, motivation, self-regulation, and cognition and exercise. She has presented at national and regional conferences including, the National Science Foundation, the League for Innovation and NERA. Dr. Salis is a member of American Education Research Association (AERA), NERA and SOPHE. Prior to her career in academia, Dr. Salis was the Health and Wellness Director of the Cross Island YMCA of Greater New York and the Program Director for the medical weight management practice - Integrative Weight Management.
