Career-Connected Learning is Focus of Intensive Faculty Workshop
Queensborough faculty members, administrators, and staff gathered in the Student Union on May 9 to participate in the Career-Connected Learning Faculty Workshop. Hosted by the 2024-25 Queensborough CUNY Career Success Fellows, Dr. Mercedes Franco, Dr. Jennifer Maloy, and Dr. Amy Traver, the CUNY Office of Transformation, QCC’s Office of Academic Affairs, Student Career Program Manager Sandra Williams Strauss and Student Experiential Learning Specialist Denise Olson from QCC’s Office of Career Services, and QCC’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. The half-day event was an opportunity for faculty to share approaches and consider new ways to create career-connected learning opportunities for students.
Dr. Christine Mangino, President of Queensborough Community College, offered welcoming remarks emphasizing the importance of “encouraging students to make informed decisions and to take full advantage of the world of opportunities for internships and apprenticeships that lead to sustained careers.”
Attendees also heard from guest speakers Mary Gatta, Director of Research and Public Policy at the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and former CUNY faculty member. Additional remarks were given by Rachel Stephenson, Chief Transformation Officer, CUNY Office of Transformation.
Among those who presented on their work at the event were Dr. Franco, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science; Dr. Maloy, Associate Professor of English; and Dr. Traver, Professor of Social Sciences. Additional presenters were former Queensborough CUNY Career Success Fellows, Mark Ulrich, Assistant Professor, Business; Dr. Punita Bhansali, Associate Professor, Biological Sciences and Geology; and Dr. Christi Saindon, Assistant Director, Communication, Theatre and Media Production.
Participants received a Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) certificate of completion as well as a book for further reading.
