Students and their faculty mentors shined at the Eighth Annual Undergraduate Research & Creative Works Day, held on December 1
“We are delighted to share 74 presentations, showcasing the work of 133 students mentored by 44 faculty mentors over the past year,” said Dr. Sarbani Ghoshal, who offered opening remarks at the Eighth Annual Undergraduate Research & Creative Works Day which displayed student projects across the disciplines. Dr. Ghoshal, of Biological Sciences & Geology, is the Co-chair of the College’s Research Committee with Dr. Roumen Vragov of the Business Department. The event was planned by Dr Ghoshal along with Dr Roumen Vragov, Dr Regina Sullivan, Dr Paul Sideris, Dr Andrew Bulawa, Dr Matthew Lau, Dr Rezan Akpinar, Dr Zhou Zhou, Prof. Jennifer Chabra and Ms. Christina Denny.
Dr. Ghoshal continued, “The College is proud of the hard work and dedication of our faculty mentors and students participating in undergraduate research and creative works activities and we are pleased to offer each of you the opportunity to engage in this excellent learning experience.”
Undergraduate Research Day is a clear result of students collaborating with peers and faculty to develop strong investigative and presentation skills that will go a long way in preparing them to successfully continue their education or enter the workforce.
“Congratulations to our students on this exciting work,” said President Christine Mangino. “To be recognized by faculty and peers in this way is truly an honor. And this is a special opportunity to make new friends and meet faculty you may want to study with during your academic career at the College.”
Dr. Mangino added, “I want to thank all our faculty for playing such an active role in our students’ development. Because of your mentorship and dedication to our students, we are among the most recognized community colleges in the country that participates in undergraduate research.”
Additional senior administrators who offered remarks were Dr. Phyllis Curtis-Tweed, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Michael Pullin, Dean for Academic Initiatives in the Office of Academic Affairs, and Mr. Veer Shetty, who represented Dr. Ron Nerio, Research Programs Director, CUNY Office of Research.
Undergraduate Research Day posters and panel discussions were presented from twelve departments namely Art and Design, Biological Sciences and Geology, Business, Chemistry, Engineering Technology, English, Health, Physical Education and Dance, History, Kupferberg Holocaust Center, Mathematics and Computer Science, Nursing and Social Sciences. The panel discussions, which were introduced this year, with students of English and History departments were held in the Oakland Dining Hall.

-NASA (National Aeronautics and Space…) Center for Advanced Batteries for Space scientific poster. The Department of Biological Sc and Geology had the maximum number of presentations (14) which included projects on anticancer activities by treatment with compounds, antimicrobial resistance, electrical signals in Mimosa pudica, identification of genetically modified food among many.
The Undergraduate Research and Creative Works Day is held on the first Friday of December every year.
