400+ Queensborough Students Benefited from Community’s Thanksgiving Generosity
Assembly Member David Weprin, and Council Member Linda Lee were among local officials and community members joining Queensborough Community College President Dr. Christine Mangino on Tuesday, November 21, to distribute donated groceries and fresh turkeys to more than 400 Queensborough students in need.
Queensborough’s late morning Thanksgiving Food Distribution was part of the College’s Give Thanks, Give Back drive to raise funds, which support the provision and delivery of emergency goods and services to members of the Queensborough community.
Queensborough students accept generous Thanksgiving donations, including fresh produce and turkeys, from the community and Queensborough Community College’s Food Pantry on Tuesday, November 21.
Grubhub has generously donated funds for the Thanksgiving Food Distribution for two years in row. Last year it was $5, 000 and this year, $7,500. With their generous support, Queensborough distributed over 200 turkeys and over 350 bags of perishables and non-perishables.
"Grubhub is proud to partner with Queensborough Community College for the second year on Thanksgiving," said Brett Swanson, Head of Community Affairs at Grubhub. "Through Grubhub's 'Serving the City' program, we hope to alleviate some of the stress on families during the holiday season by providing delicious meals. Thank you to all those involved in making this event possible. "Several volunteers from Ridgewood Savings Bank lent a hand. A special thank you went to Amiel Singer, ’71, for his continued support.
“We are so grateful for the generosity of our donors and belief in our students to accomplish their goals,” said Queensborough President, Dr. Christine Mangino. “Since the start of the 2023 Fall semester, there have been over 1,000 visits to the Food Pantry. This is why giving back is so important and events like today’s further confirms our commitment to student success and our culture of care.”
“We are a community who cares deeply about the success of every student. Thanksgiving is an ideal time to give back, and we are grateful to our community partners who recognize that students cannot feed their minds on an empty stomach,” said Queensborough Vice President Stephen Di Dio.
He added, “We want to support and inspire students to stay on track, focus on their studies, and pursue their dreams of earning a college degree.”###
