Queensborough to Offer Free Online Language Courses

Published: May 26, 2020

The Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Queensborough Community College will offer two free online language courses designed to help unemployed individuals gain new skills in an increasingly diverse workforce.

The courses: basic workplace English and conversational Mandarin will be conducted online via Zoom on Mondays and Thursdays, June 1 – July 2. The basic workplace English course will be held from 9-11 am, and the Mandarin class will be held from 6-8 pm. Both classes will offer a total of 40 hours of instruction over the course of five weeks.

“Working closely with NYS Assemblyman Ron Kim, CEWD is pleased to offer two project-based training programs – Basic Mandarin Conversation and ESL – to promote meaningful language learning for workplace skills,” said Dean Hui-Yin Hsu, Ph.D. “Both of these courses will not only cover basic literacy skills, but also facilitate the transference and inculcation of workplace-related skills and attainment of intercultural competence. It can be of great benefit to learn a second language, regardless of specific industry or position in the workplace. Learning a new language adds to your marketable skills.”

This program is made possible by a grant from the NYS Office of Children & Family Services through the efforts of NYS Assembly member Ron Kim.

"Though the current health crisis has disrupted lives and work schedules for many of us, I know many New Yorkers remain resilient and ready to sharpen or advance their professional skills,” said Assemblyman Ron Kim. “For those with the time and drive, QCC's Continuing Education Department is offering important language classes that will help many students with employment opportunities and future career paths. I am thankful that the grant I helped secure is being used by the Department to address New York's shortage of Adult Literacy Education resources and to fund upcoming entrepreneurship courses this summer."

Enrollment is limited: Those interested should visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WorkplaceEnglish to register for the Basic Workplace English course and https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/learnmandarin to register for the Conversational Mandarin course.
