Top Scores go to Numerous Queensborough Students in State and Regional Mathematics Contests
The results are in for the fall 2015 NYSMATYC and AMATYC mathematics contests!
Each semester, the Math Team participates in math competitions, including those given by the CUNY Math League, the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC), and the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). Queensborough’s students take the exams on campus in the Science Building.
In the fall 2015 NYSMATYC contest, held on October 28, Queensborough came in first place out of the 25 participating colleges. The top scorers were Queensborough students Tao Hong, who came in second place; Haixia Wang, who came in third place; Haiyang Liu and Zhengping Wang, who tied for tenth place; and Kate Han, who came in 16th place.
“Participating in the math contest improved my critical thinking, and deepened my understanding of various math applications,” said Tao Hong. “To me, science and math are the keys to unlock the natural phenomenon that we see, and also phenomena beyond our perception.” Tao plans to further his studies in material engineering and nanoscience. His dream is to pursue a doctorate and become a material chemist.

At the AMATYC contest, held on October 21, Queensborough tied for first place with Suffolk Community College in the Northeast region, and placed 33rd in the U.S. The top scorers were Queensborough students Zhengping Wang, who came in third place in the Northeast region; Haixia Wang, who came in fourth place; Tao Hong, who came in fifth place; and Kyung Ok Han and Juan Javier Arcenas, who tied for fifteenth place.
Dr. Howard Sporn, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences and co-coordinator of The Math Club, says the winning strategy is simple: “Prepare rigorously and regularly before the contest, review exams from previous contests, and then repeat the process. Our students are academically talented and, just as importantly, motivated to succeed. I’m very proud of their outstanding efforts.”
All QCC students are welcome to join the Math Club and the Math Team, regardless of their area of study. The club coordinators are Dr. Howard Sporn, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, and Dr. Robert Holt, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences.
