Course-specific student learning outcomes:

1. Due to the wide variety of established chamber music groups of varying instrumentation, it is understood that there are many repertories, numerous successful methodologies, and that students will arrive at the final level of expected competency through unique means.  Students enrolled in Chamber Music Study in Music Performance will:

• Engage in the process of preparation and performance of chamber music repertoire without the leadership of a conductor.
• Communicate musical concepts through physical gestures and eye-contact.
• Apply techniques for rehearsing repertoire within a chamber music group setting.
• Develop a collective interpretation of the musical work(s) being studied and performed that is informed by theoretical analysis and an awareness of historical performance practices.

2. Acquire knowledge of the characteristics and performance challenges of instruments or voices other than their own within the context of rehearsing and preparing chamber music repertoire for performance.

Prepare students who wish to transfer to a four-year institution of higher learning to pursue a career in music by providing a solid foundation in the areas of musicianship and performance.

Student Evaluation Criteria:

Final grade will consist of the following components:

• Weekly Coaching with Instructor            70%
• Final Performance Grade                       30%

Weekly Coaching: Each student within the chamber music group will be evaluated weekly on:

• Satisfactory demonstration, retention and improvement of technical, musical, and rehearsal concepts presented by the instructor
• Punctuality to scheduled coaching sessions
• Cooperative engagement with the other members of the chamber music group

Final Performance: All students enrolled in Chamber Music Study will perform prepared repertoire on a student convocation performance date set by the Music Department.  Each chamber music group will be required to submit detailed program information (full composition name, opus/catalog number or year of composition, full composer name and birth and death years) and program notes for repertoire selections performed on the concert to their instructor at least two weeks before the performance date.  Evaluation of the final performance will include:

• Punctual arrival
• Proper dress
• Stage deportment
• Successful expression of technical, musical and chamber music performance concepts addressed over the entire semester in weekly coaching by the instructor.

Class Policies:

• Practice:  This course requires a minimum of two hours of scheduled group rehearsal outside of instructor coaching sessions per week.  Individual practice may also be required in preparation for group rehearsal and instructor coaching sessions.
• Email: Students will be expected to respond to all email inquiries initiated by the instructor.
• Physical Contact: Due to the nature of instruction, there may be cases where physical contact between the instructor and the student may be necessary to demonstrate posture and hand placement. The instructor will make the student aware of any contact before approaching the student. If this contact makes the student uncomfortable, the student may express this to the instructor and other arrangements will be made.
• Dress Code: It is the student’s responsibility to wear appropriate attire as determined by the instructor for coaching sessions and the final performance. Instruction may be withheld if inappropriate attire is worn.

Attendance:

Attendance is mandatory. In order to make chamber music each rehearsal, each student of in the chamber music group must be present and ready to perform his or her individual part at the specified rehearsal time. If one or more members cannot attend the specified instructor coaching time due to illness, the group must notify the instructor via email at least 24 hours in advance of the coaching time so that the instructor can accordingly. 3 or more unexcused absences will result in a failing grade. Make up coaching sessions will be given at the discretion of the instructor. If the instructor must miss a weekly coaching session due to professional obligations, the instructor will arrange an alternative coaching session time with the chamber music group.

Academic Integrity policy (department or College):
Academic honesty is expected of all students. Any violation of academic integrity is taken extremely seriously. All assignments and projects must be the original work of the student or teammates. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any questions regarding academic integrity should be brought to the attention of the instructor.
