1. Review and evaluate summary reports describing initiatives to assess student learning from academic departments, academies, and academic programs of the college;
COMPLETED

Committee members were assigned to review teaching departments' assessment reports. Members used rubrics established by the committee to score the reports, the rubrics with scores and comments were collected, and findings presented during the May 15th meeting. Some departments had not submitted reports at the time of the committee's review.  Members agreed to follow up with the chairs of their departments to provide suggestions about the process of creating the assessment reports.

2. Review and evaluate documents relating to assessments of institutional effectiveness from all non-academic units of the college;

COMPLETED

Committee members were assigned to review sets of annual reports of non-academic units. Members used rubrics established by the committee to assess the reports. The scores were collected and discussed during the Fall semester meetings. The most common areas in need for improvement were the alignment of the assessment with the unit goals and identifying the target. The Committee made a suggestion that a hands on workshop for individuals tasked with preparing the reports would be helpful in identifying and clarifying the alignments between the goals and outcomes well as identifying the target. The suggestion was received very positively.

3. Make annual reports of progress in assessment of data collection, including:

  • The review of assessment reports from each department/unit of the college;
  • Courses/college units assessed from each department
  • Summary of Assessment data gathered from assessments;
  • Any departmental conclusions drawn and/or actions taken as a result.

IN PROGRESS - the review of the assessment reports was delayed until the last meeting of the semester. In the future this task should be completed faster. The report on General Education Objectives was not ready and will be reviewed in Fall 2024.

4. Review and evaluate assessment procedures the College undertakes and make recommendations concerning these assessment initiatives to the Academic Senate, in support of principles of shared governance, academic freedom and transparency.

List of Steering Committee charges and notation of “completed” or “not completed” with reasoning for incomplete items

There was only one charge from the Steering Committee: Analyze the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) survey results and report to the Academic Senate.

COMPLETED

Committee members were assigned topical areas to review (there were nine sections of the COACHE survey results).   The committee met, discussed and identified items of concern, and each member summarized the assigned survey areas.  An overall report based on these summaries, and committee recommendations on how to address the reported findings, was written. The committee held an online vote and the report was approved. During the May 14th 2024 meeting the report was presented to the Academic Senate by the co-Chairs Urszula Golebiewska and Mark Ulrich. The report is posted on the committee website as the monthly report for May 2024.
