Student success is the responsibility of every member of our campus community. I have met many faculty and staff who go out of their way to help students stay engaged and obtain the support they need in order to be successful. Their exemplary and caring approach has inspired me to create an award to recognize those who make an important difference in our students' lives.

One way to measure student success is through retention rates, which look at the number of first-time freshmen who return the following fall semester, and the 3-year graduation rates for first-time freshmen. We can all work together to increase our retention and graduation rates each by 2%, which is something not that far out of reach. Improving the rates by 2% would increase the number of students registered next fall (2021) by 50 students and increase the number of students who started in fall 2018 and graduate next year by an additional 55 students. Together, we can do this!

The President's Queensborough Community C.A.R.E.S. Award honors faculty and staff who advance this goal and whose efforts and achievements demonstrate an exemplary commitment to our students, service beyond what is expected, and an attitude of caring and selflessness.

Congratulations to our inaugural recipients

Janine Savva

Janine Savva, an ASAP Adviser since February 2020, is an inaugural recipient of The President’s C.A.R.E.S Award, due to her distinguished service to Queensborough students. The Commendation and Recognition for Excellence in Service Award, introduced in the fall of 2020 by Dr. Christine Mangino, honors faculty and staff who work to improve Queensborough’s overall retention and graduation rates. Janine, who supports and motivates hundreds of students annually, goes beyond what is expected. She is dedicated to undergraduates she considers her own students. “I meet my students where they are. I tell them not to allow anyone to define who they are and remind them that it’s normal not to know what they want to do. There is a big difference between ‘going’ to college and ‘doing’ college; there is so much to know [about finances and college administration.]. My greatest satisfaction comes from having a role in their self-discovery and personal growth.” With a background in psychology as a Behavior Analyst, Janine says her greatest priority is to empathize with her students and reduce their anxiety caused by the pressure of attending college. “I am here to support my students. That’s all that matters.”


 

Isabel Hocevar

Isabel Hocevar, Queensborough Director of Health Services, is an inaugural recipient of The President’s C.A.R.E.S Award, due to her distinguished service to the Queensborough community. The Commendation and Recognition for Excellence in Service Award was introduced in the fall of 2020 by Queensborough President, Dr. Christine Mangino. Instrumental in the College’s initial response to, and ongoing management of, COVID-19, Hocevar is also a member of Queensborough’s Workplace Violence Advisory Team. As Director of Health Services, she is responsible for the delivery of quality health care and health education to all students, contributing to their academic success and personal growth. In 2020 she was named an inaugural “Unsung Shero” of Queens by Assembly member Ron Kim (D-Flushing), for her outstanding service to our community and presented with a Women of Distinction 2020 Awards by Affinity Health for “doing incredible work, helping individuals and families who are often most in need.” With the college since 2002, the Registered Nurse says her students always come first: “I’m often on the phone everyday with them until 12:30am. This is what I want to do for our students. I’m so grateful to be recognized. This award has really put a smile on my face.”

Queensborough, ranked one of the top community colleges in the country, is working to ensure that more students complete their degrees on time.

Retention

The retention rate for our Fall '19 first-time freshmen is 62%. This means that 62% who enrolled in Fall ‘19 are currently registered for classes this semester.

Moving the retention rate from 62% to 64% for the Fall '20 first-time freshmen cohort will increase the number of students who are still registered next fall (2021) by 50 students!

Graduation

Our 3-year graduation rate indicates that 28% of first-time freshmen who began in Fall '17 graduated within three years.

Moving our 3-year graduation rate from 28% to 30% will increase the number of students who started in Fall '18 and graduate this year by an additional 55 students!

Eligibility, Categories & Criteria

Directors, Managers and Supervisors can nominate employees. All nominees will be acknowledged and two exceptional colleagues (one faculty and one staff member) will be selected and honored on this C.A.R.E.S. Award webpage each month.

The nominee should, by way of example, have:

  • Demonstrated exceptional support for an individual student or group of students;
  • Demonstrated proactive and innovative methods of advisement and support;
  • Demonstrated work which inspires others and a commitment “above and beyond” the College's mission and values;
  • Demonstrated an extraordinary effort that helped motivate students to stay engaged with and committed to their college education
Nominations are due by the 15th of each month. Winners will be announced the first week of the following month.
