TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

  • My objectives as a teacher are: (1) to facilitate learning in such a way that students find the material interesting and enjoyable and so are prompted to learn on their own; (2) to foster critical thinking and the development of problem solving skills; (3) to find ways to transmit effectively my enthusiasm and love of the sciences to students.
  • Scientific Research is an essential part of a science education that I believe can achieve these goals and that I encourage students to pursue. I like to set aside time for office hours or group meetings where students can seek out assistance or advice and discuss matters relating to course or research material.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • The design and characterization of new types of organic compounds - in particular ionic liquids. Ionic liquids are compounds that are expected to be crystalline salts at room temperature but are unexpectedly liquids. They have potential applications as new electrolytes in batteries and as alternative media for chemical reactions. They have also been investigated for use in fuel cells, chromatography, as lubricants and as media for the storage of radioactive waste. We have recently synthesized a series of ionic liquids based on mono- and polycationic ammonium species bearing phosphate (PO4 3-), dicyanamide [(CN) 2N -], bis(oxalato)borate (BOB -) and bis(trifyl)imide [(CF 3SO 3) 2N -] anions.
  • The synthesis of compounds that are environmentally friendly both in their construction and degradation.
  • Utilizing microwave energy in the synthesis of ionic liquids.
  • Research projects in the above areas are carried out in collaboration with ionic liquid groups of Robert Engel at Queens College and James Wishart at Brookhaven National Laboratories

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL HONORS
