Copper Development Association
Congratulations to Nidhi Gadura (Department of Biological Sciences and Geology), who received $10,000 from the Copper Development Association in renewed support of her project, "Membrane Lipid Peroxidation as a Mechanism of Copper Surface-Mediated Toxicity."
Career Pathways Expands to Bronx
Congratulations to Mary Anne Meyer , Director of the Career Pathways program at Queensborough Community College. QCC's Career Pathways project has been selected for a 3-year, $673,428 contract by the New York State Education Department, to expand services to previously unserved areas in the Bronx. Career Pathways provides dual-enrollment coursework to get high school students started toward an Associate's Degree in a Career and Technical field.
Community Campus
Congratulations to Denise Ward, Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Our new project "Community Campus" will provide afterschool and summertime educational and enrichment opportunities for high school and middle school students, thanks to a three-year, $2.26 million grant from the New York State Education Department.
STEM Academy at JHS 185
Congratulations to Dean Paul Marchese, George Tremberger (Physics Department) and Regina Sullivan (Biological Sciences and Geology) for developing an afterschool "STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy at JHS 185, a junior high school in Flushing, Queens. The STEM Academy is made possible by a $30,000 grant from The JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence
The Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence (JCNE) has provided a grant of $5,000 to our Nursing Department, to help enable the hiring of a Student Success Advocate to mentor students and ease their transfer from the Associates Degree Nursing program at QCC to the baccalaureate program at Hunter College. This funding supplements the ongoing JCNE support for improving the linkages between these programs. Congratulations to Anne Marie Menendez, department chair, on securing this additional support and recognition of her department's efforts.
Single Stop at QCC
QCC Students facing financial difficulties, legal troubles, needing help with their taxes or with securing public assistance now have a "Single Stop" to meet their needs, thanks to a $120,000 contract from Single Stop USA, supported by the Robin Hood Foundation. Congratulations and thanks to Dean Paul Jean-Pierre (Student Affairs) for making this initiative possble.
CUNY Workforce Development Initiative
Continuing Education and Workforce Development was awarded a $15,000 Workforce Development Initiative grant from CUNY to design and implement Phase II of their Hospitality initiative: "Career Pathways in the Hotel Industry through Contextually Based and Customized ESL Training". Congratulations again to Dean Denise Ward and her team!
New York Community Bank Foundation
The Nursing Department has received a grant of $10,000 from the New York Community Bank Foundation in continuation of its support of our "Virtual Hospital." These funds will enable the purchase of an updated cardiac monitor to train our students in real-life critical care situations.
CUNY Green Works! Practicum
Continuing Education and Workforce Development is on a roll! CUNY’s Green Works! Practicum will increase the capacity of participating continuing education divisions to train individuals for jobs in green sectors through updating and developing curricula, the development of green career pathway program models, and strengthening employer and other partnerships. Jerri Lynn Fields and Jeffrey Chen have been selected to participate in this program.
Making Transfer Connections
The Making Transfer Connections project is a collaborative effort of LaGuardia Community College, Queensborough Community College, Bronx Community College, Lehman College and Queens College. Funded through a U.S. Department of Education Title V (Hispanic-Serving Institutions) grant, this partnership is designed to facilitate transfer and ensure student progress toward the Bachelor’s degree by employing ePortfolio practices to strengthen three areas pivotal to transfer success: instruction, advisement, and assessment. Congratulations to Prof. Jean Darcy (English Department) and Dean Michele Cuomo (Office of Academic Affairs), who contributed to the planning and proposal writing effort convened by LaGuardia and are leading QCC’s role in this effort. QCC’s share of the collaborative grant is $90,000 per year for a five-year project, which began in October 2010.
Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP)
The aim of this project, a collaboration between Medgar Evers College and Queensborough Community College, is to strengthen undergraduate mathematics instruction by using a Theory of Constraints model, along with the Singapore problem-solving framework, to create a learning environment where students, tutors, mentors, and faculty work as a team to graduate students equipped with the lifelong thinking, conflict resolution, problem solving, decision making, management, writing, math and science skills required for STEM careers. The extensive efforts of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science toward this project are being coordinated by Prof. Haishen Yao, with a budget of approximately $135,000 per year for a 3 year project. This project is supported by the U.S. Department of Education, and began in October 2010. Congratulations to all the members of the department who have contributed to making this project a reality.
Medical Office Biller Certificate Program
This grant to the Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development from STRIVE, Inc., is the result of a collaborative application to the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). QCC’s role in the project is to provide an intensive, all-day training program for cohorts of disconnected young people, leading to the Medical Office Biller Certificate. This award is for $67,500/year for two years. Congratulations to Dean Denise Ward!
NYS Energy Research and Development Authority
Congratulations to Dean Arthur Perkins (Facilities Planning, Design and Construction), who has secured $16,184 in Recovery Act funding through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for the purchase of new, energy efficient lighting fixtures to be installed on the QCC campus.
