The City University of New York Women's Public Service Internship Program

The City University of New York is proud to offer an exciting fall internship in New York City for selected students. The Program will be coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and designated officers at each of The City University's colleges. The CUNY Women's Public Service Internship Program will provide highly qualified individuals the opportunity to learn by doing in the offices of selected legislators working to benefit women and promote women's issues in New York.

Applications are available from your Campus Faculty Coordinator or Student Affairs Office or may be downloaded in PDF format here. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by July 11.

Eligibility

The Program is open to any student who has completed 30 credits by the fall 2018 term. Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in women's issues and policies in New York. Applicants must carry a 3.0 GPA and must submit two confidential faculty recommendation forms along with their applications. CUNY will award $2,000 to each student.

Academic Component and College Credit

Selected participants will be eligible to earn academic credit by enrolling in a seminar and internship course on their college campus.

Internship Placements

Interns will be expected to serve 10 to 15 hours per week for the duration of the fall semester. Placement will be in the local offices of female legislators at the city, state and national levels. For more information, contact your Campus Faculty Coordinator or designated college officer.

NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development Summer 2018 Internship (unpaid)

About the Agency: New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development
The New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) is the nation's largest municipal housing preservation and development agency. Its mission is to promote quality housing and diverse, thriving neighborhoods for New Yorkers through loan and development programs for new affordable housing, preservation of the affordability of the existing housing stock, enforcement of housing quality standards, and educational programs for tenants and building owners. HPD is tasked with fulfilling the Mayor's Housing New York: A Five-Borough Ten-Year Plan to create and preserve 200,000 affordable units for New Yorkers at the very lowest incomes to those in the middle class.

About the Team: Neighborhood Planning in the Office of Neighborhood Strategies
The Office of Neighborhood Strategies (ONS) was created as part of the Housing Plan to ensure that HPD's development and preservation efforts are guided by meaningful community engagement and support equitable, diverse, and livable neighborhoods. The Neighborhood Planning team partners with other HPD divisions, City and State agencies, local stakeholders, and community-based organizations to facilitate comprehensive, community-based planning processes and produce neighborhood housing plans and policies. The Neighborhood Planning team is responsible for designing and implementing community-based planning processes, with the goal of identifying neighborhood needs, developing goals and strategies, and creating implementable housing and neighborhood plans.

Internship Description
The Neighborhood Planning team seeks two enthusiastic candidates with a strong interest in affordable housing and geo-spatial urban issues. One intern will support the Neighborhood Planning team's citywide community-based planning efforts, and the other intern will be focused on Where We Live NYC, a comprehensive fair housing planning process to study, understand, and address patterns of residential segregation and access to opportunity.

The Neighborhood Planning team intern is expected to perform the following duties:

  • Provide critical support to staff working on neighborhood planning studies
  • Perform basic housing, real estate, and demographic research, including spatial analysis
  • Coordinate, participate in, and lead, neighborhood workshops and other engagement activities
  • Create communication materials for public engagement activities and community workshops
  • Perform data analysis and create maps to inform housing strategy and policy
  • Conduct independent research on special projects, which may include preservation of existing affordable housing, community land trusts, etc.
  • Other tasks, as needed

The Where We Live NYC intern is expected to perform the following duties:

  • Provide critical support to staff working on stakeholder and public engagement for the Where We Live NYC fair housing planning process.
  • Assist in planning and executing a range of Where We Live NYC engagement activities, including informational meetings, roundtable discussions, and focus group-style sessions
  • Collect, synthesize, and report back on qualitative data generated throughout the Where We Live NYC engagement process
  • Create presentations, flyers, maps, and other internal and public materials
  • Perform housing and demographic research, including spatial analysis
  • Manage logistics and details of engagement events
  • Other tasks and special projects, as needed

Skills and Experience
Preference will be given to graduate students of urban planning, public policy, law, or similar fields, but advanced undergraduate students will also be considered. Ideal candidates have excellent research, analytical, and communications skills, and strong cultural competency.

The Neighborhood Planning team intern position requires proficiency in ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite.

Candidates interested in the Where We Live NYC internship should have prior experience working directly with community members through grassroots or tenant organizing, knowledge of housing issues, and/or professional proficiency in a non-English language. Proficiency in ArcGIS and/or Adobe Creative Suite is preferred, but not required.

Dates: Flexible within the Summer 2018
Duration: 8-10 weeks
Hours: Flexible within Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-6:00 pm; minimum 15 hours per week; occasional work in the evenings and on weekends

Summer 2018

The Communications department of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is excited to host a summer intern from The LAGRANT Foundation. The communications intern will work 15 to 20 hours per week over a period of three months. The starting date is June 5, 2018.

From its roots representing civil rights activists in the South, to its recent challenges to the NYPD's racially discriminatory stop-and-frisk program and indefinite detention and torture at Guantánamo, the Center for Constitutional Rights has been on the front lines of the fight for social justice for more than 50 years. We're a multiracial, diverse staff committed to building the power of the people and communities we represent through the creative use of civil and human rights litigation, education, and advocacy around a range of government and corporate abuses in areas such as immigration detention, solitary confinement, racial and religious profiling, LGBTQI rights, Palestinian human rights, and support for social justice movements.

Communications intern will assist in:

  • Monitoring media and archiving of press clips;
  • Updating media lists;
  • Researching and writing media pitches, press releases, and posts for CCR's blog and weekly newsletter;
  • Drafting social media posts and monitoring conversations on social media;
  • Documenting CCR press conferences and rallies through Facebook and Instagram Live, and
    photography, as needed;
  • Editing videos and photos for use on web pages and social media;
  • Supporting the assessment of quality of multi-media content from staff, organize content in
    photo library, and prioritize content for promotion in various channels;
  • Providing administrative support for staff; and
  • Other internship tasks as needed.

CCR is looking for interns who possess:

  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice and social change;
  • Initiative and the ability to work quickly on a deadline;
  • Strong multitasking, organizational and self-management skills;
  • The ability and willingness to learn and absorb new information quickly;
  • Excellent internet and other research skills; and
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite programs and Adobe Photoshop
  • Spanish or other non-English language skills a plus.

Compensation: The position will be paid by The LAGRANT Foundation. However, CCR will reimburse the intern for their daily transportation on a pro-rated basis up to the current cost of a monthly MetroCard for transit using NYC subways and buses, Long Island Railroad (LIRR), New Jersey Transit or MetroNorth.

Health Peer Educator

Job Description for Peer Health Educator

Join our exciting team of youth and staff to bring awareness about health and sexuality! Forestdale's peer health education program's goals are to provide health education focusing on pregnancy prevention, to encourage healthier decision making skills, and to increase community communication around sexuality. Peer educators will need to be available to attend trainings, co-facilitate workshops and conduct outreach to their peers in all parts of Queens.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Commit to being a Peer Health Educator for at least one year.
  • Attend all Peer Health Educator Training.
  • Co-facilitate workshops in middle schools, high schools and community service locations.
  • Assist with planning and presenting of sexual health education workshops and activities.
  • Assist with conducting outreach and promoting clinic services.
  • Assist with Txtline an application that sends youth weekly texts on reproductive health.
  • Assist in designing various types of health education materials (social media, flyers, etc.)
    • Assist with one-on-one peer counseling. (Advice on sexual health: puberty, birth control, condom demonstrations, etc.)
    • Attend mandatory monthly meetings.

Time Commitment

  • Must be available for paid training (total of 25 hours). Must attend all sessions to get paid.
  • ~4 hours per week/ $13 per hour.
  • Must be available:
    • For High School students: weekday afternoons between 3pm-7pm
    • For College students: available Wednesday & Thursdays from 7am-4pm
    • Also, occasional Saturdays if there is a community event for all.

Qualifications

  • Living or going to school in Queens.
  • Between the ages of 16 and 23.
  • Interested in reproductive health issues relating to youth.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, especially speaking to peers their age about sex and sexuality.
  • Mature, reliable, determined and responsible.

Project Description: Junior: Accounting, Finance, Economics Our unit is responsible for assessing risk in the district, communicating those findings to headquarters via work with the National Risk Committee and its support committees and to the examiners. We also handle operational logistics (supplies, budget, and conference room arrangements).We would be looking for the candidate to help out one or two of the lead experts on their quality assurance responsibilities and data preparation. The candidate may also be asked to help on the preparation of budget reports and some of the data analysis we do in both the operations and risk areas. We would like the candidate to possess strong written and oral communication and analytical skills. They would also need to have some accounting and financial course background beyond the initial class work. Completion of previous internships would be a plus. Experience in Word, SharePoint, or Excel would also be needed. The candidate would gain experience in financial analysis, preparation of underlying reports, and communication of those findings. They also would gain experience in the government's approach to bank supervision and risk analysis.

Paid Internship opportunities with NYC Including the NYPD

Please apply for any intern positions that are available with any and all NYC agencies. It is can be quite competitive so it's strongly suggested that you apply early and for as many positions that you can. This is a paid internship that can last up to thirteen weeks from June to September. It is a 35 hour work week and most offer 9 to 5 positions.

All prospective interns must apply for job titles using the E hire system which is an online application process. You can find more information about available positions in the New York Police Department or any city agency by going to the NYC Explore Careers page and search by agency. As a non-employee, you will have to click on "Login or create an Account." After the account is created, you can go to the "Agency" drop down list and select the agency and click "Search."
