Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of Nano materials based catalysis.

Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticles in Siloxane Matrix

The objectives of this research are:

  • To synthesize nano materials with tailor made structures and properties.
  • To synthesize highly porous organic-inorganic hybrids due to their emerging applications in green catalysis, drug delivery, light harvesting material, gas storage and sensors.
  • To have control over monodispersity, particle size, and shape of industrially significant metal nano particles like Palladium, Platinum, Silver and Gold in the silicone matrix. In our study Tris [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] isocyanurate is used as to stabilize the nano particles and was further cross linked with alkoxysilanes to generate a solid or gel like matrix.

Antimicrobial activity of nano sized Silver Particles

In collaboration with Dr. Mangala Tawde, (Department of Biological Sciences and Geology at QCC)

The objectives of this research are:

  • To achieve stable and isolable silver nano particles via the reduction method.
  • To analyze the formation and stability of Silver nanoparticles via Ultra Violet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Infra-Red (IR) spectroscopy and Transmission (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
  • Antibacterial testing of silver nano particles against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Binding interaction of silver nano particles with bacterial surface proteins.

Generation of Hybrid Materials by conjugating of Tris [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] isocyanurate stabilized metal nano particles with Carbon Nanotubes. In Collaborative with Dr. Tirandai Hemraj-Benny (Chemistry Department at QCC) and Lihua Zhang (Brookhaven National Laboratory).

The objectives of this research are:

  • Functionalize the Carbon Nanotubes with organic moieties.
  • Catalyzed reaction of Functionalized CNTs with Tris [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] isocyanurate (TTPI)
  • Catalytic activities of Metal Decorated Carbon Nanotubes.

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is a complex social responsibility and a great opportunity to have an impact on the future of the country. By experimenting and practicing over time, I have developed (and will always try to strengthen) the necessary interrelated skills: conceiving a course as a totality which includes the subject’s larger contexts, planning pragmatically how the course will proceed, cooperating with fellow teachers and assistants, stirring students to participate and in a variety of ways explaining and illustrating ideas as well as modeling and exercising problem solving techniques. In addition, I am enthusiastic, inspired and excited about my subject, I care about the students and always make myself available to their needs, and I put energy and ingenuity into my teaching.

I not only strive to give students a sense of clarity and insight about the organizing principles of my subject but also provide them the practice and self-confidence to figure things out on their own. In our technologically driven and highly interdependent society it is essential that students should learn to keep up with change by knowing how to teach themselves. I propose to do so by sharing my own thought processes with my students and by offering stimulating problems and open-ended writing assignments or projects.
