The Dental Assistant program prepares students for entry-level positions in one of the fastest growing healthcare professions. With the national increase in healthcare-related services, and the national shortage of healthcare professionals, the need for dental assistants is growing substantially. With a growing workforce over 300,000 strong, a career in dental assisting ranks as the fourth fastest growing occupation in the healthcare technician field.

The program prepares learners for entry-level positions as a chair-side dental assistant. This program covers the history of dentistry, introduction to the dental office, the legal aspects of dentistry, introduction to oral anatomy, dental operatory, introduction to tooth structure (primary and permanent teeth), the oral cavity; and other areas. The purpose of this program is to familiarize learners with all areas of administrative and clinical dental assisting focusing on the responsibilities required to function as an assistant in a dental practice.

Program Description

The Sterile Processing Technician program prepares students to perform the essential functions of sterile processing in accordance with Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) standards. Sterile Processing Technicians play a critical role in patient safety by ensuring the proper decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments, medical devices, and equipment used in healthcare settings.

This program provides students with a thorough understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and aligns with HSPA competencies and recommended practices. Instruction emphasizes compliance with regulatory standards, quality assurance, and infection prevention protocols required in modern healthcare environments.

Key instructional areas include:

• Surgical Instrumentation: Identification, function, and handling of surgical instruments and specialty devices
• Decontamination and Sterilization Processes: Cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in accordance with HSPA guidelines
• Movable Patient Care Equipment: Cleaning, testing, assembly, distribution, and documentation of patient care equipment
• Storage and Inventory Management: Proper storage, handling, distribution, inventory control, and tracking systems
• Medical Terminology and Microbiology: Anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and microbiology as they relate to sterile processing
• Infection Prevention and Safety: Decontamination, disinfection, standard precautions, and OSHA-compliant safety practices

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, learners will be able to apply HSPA standards, safety regulations, and infection prevention practices; explain relevant anatomy, physiology, and disease transmission; and demonstrate proper handling of medical waste, bloodborne pathogen precautions, and PPE use in compliance with OSHA standards. Graduates will also be able to perform quality decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization processes, and competently disassemble, inspect, assemble, store, and distribute surgical instruments and movable patient care equipment in accordance with industry standards.

Externship Opportunity

Eligible students will have the opportunity to complete a 400-hour externship with Northwell Health, providing hands-on, supervised experience in a hospital sterile processing environment. This externship allows students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings and supports eligibility for certification and employment readiness.

The need for Pharmacy Technicians continues to grow with demand expected to increase substantially through 2024. Technicians work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other healthcare settings. This high demand for pharmacy technicians is the result of a multitude of factors including the constant availability of new drugs, the national shortage of registered pharmacists, the establishment of certified pharmacy technicians, and the aging population. Approximately 400,000 technicians will be employed by the year 2024 to meet our nation's growing healthcare demands.

This comprehensive course will prepare learners to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's PTCB exam. Content includes pharmacy medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining generic and brand names drugs and much, much more. This program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to pursue certification including the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's PTCB exam.
