English as a Second Language

This course will provide students with coping skills and cultural information to help them understand the contexts of language and allow them to be culturally responsive.

Students will be taught how to use common vocabulary and grammar for everyday life, understand short conversations containing common words and phrases, as well as simple writing functions. Students will progress onto learned phrases, language expression and idioms. They will be encouraged to speak with less hesitation and, improve pronunciation including the clarity of vowel and consonant sounds.

In addition, students will be taught to become effective listeners through oral discussion, peer group, and listening to documentaries and ESL Audio short stories.

Overall, ESL students will have opportunities to become culturally fluent in US culture while learning English.
