Meet the Candidates for President

Dixa Darji, candidate for Student Government PresidentThere is this quote "with great power comes great responsibilities." The responsibilities of a President are never easy, because being the President means serving people. I want to improve the college experience. Being elected President would bring many challenges, but I would conquer those challenges because I would be serving you, which gets me excited. I have experience working with and helping people. Being a psychology major, my goal has always been to help people with their problems. In this noisy world, everyone needs a person who can hear their problems. When I think about our college there are a large number of students who all should be heard and represented. I want to take that lead for the student body. Student life is not easy anywhere in the world, but here at QCC, I would try to make it a little bit better. I don't want to make false promises, but I will try my best to make the college environment better. I'll always make myself available for you. I'll be serving this position, not for me, but for you. This win would not be just my win, but it would be our win. I know we haven't met in person, but thanks to technology we've been brought together during this pandemic. If elected, I will always look to find solutions to problems. I would like to finish with a small quote "When 'I' is replaced with 'we' even 'illness' becomes 'wellness'"

Candidate's Campaign Video: Dixa Darji

Fathma Kiani, Candidate for Student Government PresidentThe role of a President is very important and if elected, I will take the role in this college very seriously. I will try to make all decisions that are fair to all students and staff members. I will complete any work left off by the previous student government and make sure that the future student government knows what they need to do in order to keep everything and everyone in good hands.

I am known for making fair decisions that benefit not only the people involved in the issue but also the people that may come face to face with the same problems. I will make it my job to make sure that everything in college is taken care of in a timely and professional manner. I am also known for being very patient and listening to any prepositions people might have.

I work well with everyone that I come in contact with and make sure that everyone around me is heard. I will never make any student feel as though they are being ignored. Our college is going to be in safe hands if I am chosen as the SGA President. I will make sure that everyone can trust me with any issue they might have on this journey that all of us are a part of. I will make everyone in our college come together and make is a family-like environment where everyone will feel safe.

When it comes to choosing representative for the Executive Board, a Parliamentarian and an Executive Secretary, I will be very fair and make sure that the right person is chosen to handle all affairs in our college.

Meet the Candidates

Audrey Arias, Candidate for Student Government Administrative Vice PresidentHello, Everyone! I am Audrey Arias, and I am running to be your Administrative Vice President. First and foremost, I want you all to know that the duties of an Administrative Vice President are ones that I feel very passionate for. Student groups, creating opportunities for different clubs and volunteer opportunities are my main priority. Serving as your Administrative Vice President I would be able to bring all my plans to fruition on the account that my role would entail close work with Student Group Activities. My plans involve the incorporation of groups and chapters into our campus, so that we can have more experience that will not only build our confidence, but our experience and security in the future. I like many of you have felt worried about my future and coming from this place, I know that having a group of mentors and classmates can open new doors and make our college experience one that we enjoy.

While serving as your Administrative Vice President, I would aid the other members of the Student Government Association in creating a healthy and fruitful environment, so that you the students can achieve your goals. I believe I am the right fit for this honorable charge not only because of previous experience in leadership roles, but because this position spoke to me. My interests lie in making the transition from this college to another school easier, and if you allow me to, I will work diligently on my proposals to ensure I accomplish this. Most importantly, I hope to serve as your voice, advocate for your rights and protect you interests. I know that this role is nothing without you.

Shadman Khan, Candidate for Student Government Administrative Vice PresidentAs a student, I feel what students' needs are in college. I want to be the Administrative Vice President, but will not serve the college as a vice president. I will serve the SGA as a student. I will work with students, for the students, by the students. I will work with the students not as a vice president, but as a class peer to them. SGA means Student Government Association which simply stands for the association that works for the students to make their path easier on campus. If elected, I will work on making students' path easier and comfortable on campus. I believe I have the potential to be the Administrative Vice President. If elected I will do my best to make things better. It will be an honor if I'm elected for the position of Administrative Vice President.

Maisha Meem, Candidate for Student Aovernment Administrative Vice PresidentI believe that I'm capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of an Administrative Vice President, therefore I propose myself as a candidate for the position. One of my goals, to achieve if elected would be for students to have a unique and marvelous college experience. Due to the pandemic, many students didn't get to experience their final senior year or freshman year properly. I want to change that. I want them to experience an unforgettable college year during 2021-2022, even if the college is online. I can achieve this goal by pitching in my ideas when assisting or coordinating student group activities. Another reason I feel like I am suitable for this position is due to my ability to manage time and cooperate with my peers and working in teams. I have improved on this ability, during my time on my high school basketball team and also because of my experience as member of student council during my high school years. Furthermore, I would also like to help the different ethnicities in the student community by making them comfortable in the environment and not ashamed of their culture, by supporting them during student group activities and other various ways if given the opportunity. Therefore, I believe I am suitable for this position due to the various reasons mentioned above and also because I had the opportunity and the pleasure of being part of the student government during my years in high school in United Arab Emirates and also by being one of the founders and council member of one of the student clubs during my high school year in this country.

As Administrative Vice President I will do my part in making sure all activities and meetings go as planned ensuring that students are taken care of. I will do my part in making sure things are in a proper and organized order. As a leader for my fellow colleagues I will show my support and loyalty and work with them in making sure that as a whole council, we do our part to keep our school running smoothly.

Meet the Candidates for Programming Vice President

Chloe Chery, Candidate for Student Government Programming Vice PresidentTaking the role of being SGA Vice President of Programming is important, and exciting. It will be my job to team up with the Vice President of Part time students as well as the Vice President of Evening students, to aid in creating and curating events. I will also help provide a consistent budget for events so things can run smoothly. One of the main reasons why I want to run for this role is because I want all events to reflect QCC in a positive light. QCC is a huge melting pot that contains various races, ages, and identities. I want to become Vice President of Programming to mirror our school community and to make all events as inclusive as possible. My goal is to not only make the student body feel heard, but also seen. I want students to feel proud to attend a school that recognizes them for who they are as individuals. I feel like voters should elect me because I value making not only meaningful, but long lasting connections. In potentially assuming this role, I want to produce events that help other students to possibly create great connections with others, and to build friendships that can potentially last a lifetime through the events that are made. Although I am running for an executive position in the student government, I will not shy away from taking constructive criticism from others to make student life a lovely experience. I will be thoughtful enough to have an open mind and ear to the student community and try my best to make it happen.

Candidate's Campaign Video  Chloe Chery

Kelin Zhu, Candidate for Student Government Programming Vice PresidentAs a student of QCC, I have been looking forward to helping other students. The Programming Vice President is an important position that's related to students' daily life, I will participate in planning and the preparation of cultural, educational, and social programs and as the Chair of the Activities Program Council. Student activities are part of campus life and a necessity to release the pressure of study. During the pandemic, participating in student activities will bring students a strong sense of belonging and maintain our community. However, many students are not familiar with these activities that relate with them. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of students on our campus from other countries, I am one of them. Spiritual satisfaction is necessary when people are in a foreign land. But we do not have enough events for these students.

My goal is to use my role to help more and more students learn and participate in school events. I will provide a platform for all the student body to speak out their needs, including but not limited to learning needs, entertainment needs, social needs, and cultural needs. I will plan more activities for international students. Not only that, but I am planning to bring new games for game nights, and monthly mental health events or other events that can make students feel relax.

I believe that to understand students' needs is very important for a Programming Vice President, and I am a good listener. Vote for me, vote for someone who really cares for the students' voice. I am ready to create a better and funny experience for every student on the campus with other members of the board.

Meet the Candidates for Treasurer

Olamiposi Akinfeleye, Candidate for Student Government TreasurerMy name is Olamiposi O. Akinfeleye, I am 20 years old, and I'm currently a freshman and this is my second semester at Queensborough. I am currently majoring in Business Administration. I am running for the position of SGA Treasure because I love the idea of managing money and using the money in the right places where everyone will benefit from it.

When I was in 7th grade, about 13 years old I was so determined to buy a printer because I was tired of walking 40 minutes to the library every other day to print out my homework. I couldn't get a job because I was too young. That's when I came up with the idea of saving up the money I got for a month, at this time my parents use to give me $20 every week for lunch at school so I chose to starve myself for a few hours and save up the weekly $20 and by the end of the month I have $80 in total and I did this for two months and saved up to $160 and I ended up giving the money to my sister and we bought the printer. Not only did I get what I needed, the printer was also useful to everyone else in the house.

This was one of my first experiences with managing money. At the age were most kids would rather eat and ask their parents for most of the things they want. What does this story tell you about me?

When I see something that needs to be done I will find ways, no matter what, to gather the money together. So as your treasurer I will find ways to make your wishes come through because nothing is impossible when you make the right choices.

My goal is to be open, to hear everyone ideas including (student clubs, student groups, and other responsibilities) and find ways to please everyone but also being smart with managing the budgets.

While serving on the government as a Treasurer my plan is to be supportive of every role of the other members of the board but most importantly the student body.

I want to be an instrument that will strengthen and support the view and ideas of the students. And I will accomplish this through managing the school funds while being fair to every group in QCC.

I want to represent the best interest of the student general body, because I don't only want the position but I am also willing to do everything in my power to help us and those who will come after us have a better school experience.

Akram Gibriel, Candidate for Student Government TreasurerI am Akram Gibriel and am proudly running for the position of SGA Treasurer. If elected, I plan to secure the SGA budget by tracking where the money goes and how it is being spent. I will also be performing my basic and essential duties as the Chair of the Allocation Committee (which provides the budgets to student clubs and student groups) along with other responsibilities as a member of the board. As Treasurer, I will do all my best to ensure the students' plans will always come first and will never be put on the back burner. My goal is to use my role to help ensure everyone has a greater sense of community on campus. I also wish to reform the club system and to have the correct amount of funds easily accessed when needed in order to create new funds. When a special tasks comes to me to be completed, I will try my very best to complete that task. The student body of QCC needs someone who not only wants to be the Treasurer but is ready to do the work that is required for the position. I Akram Gibriel will help to create a better school experience for those of us currently at QCC and for those who will come after us.

Advocates for evening students. Assists in event programming as a member of the Activities Programming Council (APC).

2.25 GPA, must have completed a minimum of 12 credits/equated credits, must carry a minimum of 6 credits/equated credits while holding office.

Meet the Candidates for Evening Vice President

Arbine Ryan, Candidate for Student Government Evening Vice PresidentMy name is Arbine Ryan and I am an Engineering Science major. The role of the Evening Vice President is very important as I will be responsible for assisting in event programming as a member of the Activities Programming Council. I am running in this year's election to be a role model for college students and assist them with internship opportunities, scholarships, and practical experience that is related to their major. Also, my job will be to advocate for evening students who are interested in certain clubs that will provide them the opportunity to showcase their leadership abilities and true potential. Furthermore, my goal is to provide equal opportunities to everyone despite their race, gender, and status. While serving on the government as the Vice President for Evening Students, my objective is to be a voice for the students and support them to the very end. I believe in fairness and equity for all students.

On the other hand, it is my obligation to stand up against injustice especially, for students of color who are being treated unfairly. My intentions are to help extend hours for the library, food pantry, bookstore, cafeteria, and other basic services. In addition, I am also thinking about opportunities outside the campus for students to interact with their peers and have entertainment. Every major can be categorized into groups so, those who are Nursing majors will be one group and Engineering Science majors will be in another group. Lastly, I feel like I am the best candidate for this position due to my hard-working ability, dedication to academics, and passion for helping others achieve their dreams. It is not always about who is smart, intelligent, and snobbish but being genuine and making a difference around the world is far more important. So please vote for me and I will lead by example.

Candidate's Campaign Video  Arbine Ryan

Nina Borja, Candidate for Student Government Evening Vice PresidentThe role of the Vice President of Evening Students is to represent the evening students. If elected, my goal is to serve as the voice of these students. In order to be this, I will listen to the students' opinions, suggestions, and needs. I will base my projects and programs with what I will gather and from there, I will work with the members of the student government to ensure that programs will be fulfilled and that problems will be addressed. I am approachable, a good listener, and I am committed towards representing my batch.

As the Vice President, I am prepared to support the President's programs and also provide assistance to the other members of the student government. I am also prepared to take over the duties of the President if they are busy, unable to, or are in need of aid. I will discuss my ideas, and express the concerns of the evening students, guaranteeing myself to be an effective team player and an instrument of good welfare.

It is my duty as a member of the student government to not only limit my availability to evening students, but to administer to all students. This involves working alongside the other members of the board in order to create a better learning environment for everyone.

We cannot do this alone. We will need the support and participation of every student in order for the officers to have a successful term. I hope that the soon-to-be officers will be another option for the students to reach out to.

Candidate's Campaign Video  Nina Borja

Sophia Rosado, Candidate for Student Government Evening Vice PresidentMy name is Sofia I. Rosado, I am 19 years old, and I'm currently a freshman in my second semester at Queensborough with a study in Computer Science and Information Security. I'm running for the position of Vice President for Evening Students because I'm sure taking night classes is a struggle, especially during the time throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As I will be working alongside the Programming Vice President in organizing events and programs flexible for your class schedules and performing duties as co-chairperson of the Constitution Review and Revision Committee of the Student Senate with the President Pro-Tempore, I will make it my top priority to make sure you, the students, are included in any events the college presents and communicate with the student body. As an undergraduate freshman starting at a new college fully online, it's hard to maintain a decent GPA while trying to be involved and connected with other students. My goal as Vice President for Evening Students is to be your leader and take the importance of evening classes into consideration. While I will continue past programs and events, as well as improving them, I will have open arms to any new ideas for events from other members of the government and, more importantly, the student body because your choices are what make the college a better place for learning and enjoyment. As Vice President for Evening Students, I will fight for you, stand with you, and assist you in anything you need because the voices of the student body should always be heard, not ignored!

Meet the Candidates for Part-Time Vice President

Gianella Balda, Candidate for Student Government Part-Time Vice PresidentAs the newly appointed Vice President for Part-Time Students, I understand the importance of this position and the voice I am able to bring for other Part-Time students. As a single mother, a full-time worker, and a part-time student, life becomes difficult as it is to manage. My goal in being Vice President for Part-Time Students is to suggest and/or create events that those with unusual schedules can attend and benefit from. During the pandemic, many negative things have been brought upon us, unfortunately, especially when it comes to schooling. But one of the positive things that came about during the pandemic that I feel part-time students can benefit from is the events now being held virtually. I personally have always found myself listening to podcasts on my way home from work. I hope to extend these type of events to be able to provide flexibility for those that cannot attend events virtually and they can listen to them just as if they were podcasts. And in trying to accommodate all types of students, I would even suggest having hybrid options for future events (both in-person and virtual, at the same time). In addition, I hope to be able to bring diversity to the SGA as someone who is older than a typical college student and has worked in the corporate world for more than 10 years. This experience can bring so much value in coming up with different types of workshops that all students can benefit from. I would love to represent those students that find themselves in similar situations. Overall, I hope to continue being a great asset to QCC as the Vice President for Part-Time Students now and through next year.

Charlayne Hurlington, Candidate for Student Government Part-Time Vice PresidentThe role of Vice President for Part-Time Students is extremely significant as I will be a voting member of the Queensborough Student Association (QSA) Executive Board. My goal is to use my role to help encourage a greater sense of community on campus most importantly now because we are operating synchronously. While serving on student the government as VP for Part-Time Students, my plan is to be a supporting role to the other members of the board but most importantly the student body. I want to use my experience and background to inspire and engender inclusivity with our students. I vow to support the ideas and plans of the students and be a listening ear that helps them to navigate and materialize their aspirations.

I will accomplish this through a partnership with the Programming VP. Together we will coordinate events and programs for Part-Time students. We will ensure that the correct amount of funding is allocated and managed properly to yield seamless execution of events. I also wish to continue the work of the previous board by reforming the club system and hosting virtual fundraisers to support new clubs with the necessary funding. I believe to represent the best interests of the general student body you need someone who is driven and understands that there is no such thing as impossible. Meet the Candidates for Student Senator At Large

I have a strong desire to become a Student Senator at Large at Queensborough Community College. I am majoring in Liberal Arts and Sciences and aim to be a journalist in the future. My desire to help and be a strong voice for those who may not feel heard runs deep, and as your Senator, I promise to listen and lend credence to your concerns as students; helping to bring about changes that not only betters the lives of our students but also betters the overall experience for all persons at QCC. I am a President for Communique Club, which represents college newspaper. I also serve as an editor and writer for college newspaper. My participation in extracurricular activities allowed me to learn how to effectively balance the tasks with which I was posed, while simultaneously managing my schoolwork. In addition, I've grown quite accustomed to working with and around large groups.

By electing me, you would be electing somebody experienced with a collaborative work style and strives for excellence. I want the Student Senate to succeed and to be a positive organization that brings about positive change at the college. Moreover, I want to be a person whom you can come to with issues, ideas, or general concerns regarding the direction in which college policy may be going. I want to be there for you. As a Senator at Large, I would like to find myself engaged with all of my classmates in order to create a successful and inclusive atmosphere in which every person can flourish both academically and socially.

The position that I seek in the QCC body of government is that of Student Senator at Large. Choosing this position, my duties will be to represent the needs and voice the concerns of students attending QCC. I will also take part in meetings that decide the future of QCC students. My goal as a member of the Senate is to be active in the academic lives of students especially during confusing times such as this with academics being online. School has drastically changed due to COVID-19. During this time I want to develop a great sense of responsibility towards students and the QCC Board as whole. This is my first time attempting to run for any form of student government. I don't want to just go to QCC, I would like to be a part of it. I am willing to learn and to strive to fulfill the role of a QCC Student Senate at Large while being a helping hand to the Board I'll be serving if elected. I will also uphold the QCC constitution and work towards providing the student body with a positive college experience.

Briana Ross, Candidate for Student Government Senator-at-LargeThe role of Student Senator at Large is very important to me as I would like to be a voice for my fellow students and help to make decisions along with the school and student body to help improve college life on and off campus. I will listen to my fellow students' concerns, needs, and wants and then working with the Administration come up with a way of fixing or improving things. I've always felt having someone who can relate to me in office and who actually cares for the people is what we need to help make every aspect of our lives better especially since college courses alone can already be stressful enough with everyday life issues involved. Having someone who considers everything and who is on the side of the minority is what we all need.

Responsible for approving Student Clubs with a budget.

Insures adherence to the QSA Constitution.

Decides on disciplinary cases dealing with faculty vs. students.

Meet the Candidates for Student Faculty Disciplinary Committee

The inclusive environment of the college is based on faculty and student's relation. In every college, there are some admirable and unfortunate dilemmas going on among students and faculty members. I want to serve this position because I want to work out those problems within faculty and students. We should acknowledge that the student and faculty relationship is very respectful to keep it professional, respectful, and away from the difficulties is very important. Being a psychology student, I think I can help our college making dutiful decisions regarding these. Also, it is the student government's responsibility to keep the college environment respectful and healthy. I will try my best to maintain and increase good relations between faculty and students so it benefits the college in many different ways. If I get elected for this post, the first thing I'll do is create more transparency in communication between students and faculty. This will make the task easy and activities transparent on both the side. Further distinct grievances solving teams may help in solving more problems. I think study and work environments can be maintained side by side. These could also make our college management and student's mindset beneficial and healthy to work and study. Additionally, my priority would be working on solutions rather than making noise of the problems. As I mentioned before, being a psychology student, I know the basic human tendency of finding flaws in every situation or system however when it comes to me, I will help to make it more solution-oriented. That's what I feel every student committee should do.
