Congratulations To Our Colleagues Receiving Tenure And Certificate Of Continuous Employment (CCE)

April 4, 2017
Today is a celebration of your tenure appointments--your accomplishments as educators, your constructive service to our college, and especially your dedication to our students.

In my letter to you, in addition to my congratulations, I charged you with responsibilities as new senior members of the faculty.

Of course it is expected you will continue to advance your skills in your field and in pedagogy, to become a master teacher. For those of you who are assistant professors, you must continue your research and productivity as a scholar.

But these are ordinary expectations---and Queensborough faculty are certainly not ordinary.

There is a higher bar for you to reach--and every one of you has the capacity to do so: be a mentor to faculty colleagues; be a positive influence in your departments, in committees on which you serve, in your dialogue with colleagues on important issues and initiatives; be a model of constructive behavior and a willing participant in our community. And most of all, as a senior member of our faculty, accept your duty of care towards junior/untenured colleagues in any department, to safeguard their rights to engage in dialogue and service without pressure from those whose rhetoric (even well meaning) is experienced as intimidating.

Think of those situations that challenged you, and those who offered encouragement and support-- Pledge to shield your junior colleagues from those unhappy experiences … and pay the good ones forward.

You are tenured ---you can step in on behalf of others who are vulnerable--you can step up as a voice for thoughtful dialogue. You can be leaders for the good. And I know with certainty, you WILL.
