Biography and Research Interests

NICOLE LOPEZ-JANTZEN received her BA from the University of Maryland, College Park (2002) and her MA (2005) and PhD (2012) from Fordham University. Before joining the QCC faculty, she taught medieval history and religious studies at Fordham University, Drew University and John Jay College. In her research she promotes a holistic approach to the study of the past by analyzing written documents and material culture, and has excavated and collaborated with archaeologists from the University of Bologna in Ravenna and the University of Salento in Supersano (Lecce). She has presented her research at several conferences in the United States and Europe, and recently organized panels for the International Medieval Congress in Leeds (UK) and the American Historical Association meetings. This academic year Dr. Lopez-Jantzen will be presenting research at the Southeastern Medieval Association and the American Historical Association and participate in a roundtable on teaching at the International Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo in addition to teaching courses on medieval and early modern history.

Courses Taught: Medieval and Early Modern Western Civilization; Pagans and Christians to 1500

Research Interests:  Late Antique and Early Medieval Italy, Mediterranean history, medieval barbarians, ideology, identity construction, material culture
