The mission of the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC) is to serve as a creative catalyst for promoting the arts to students of all ages and residents of Queens and greater New York City. QPAC has become a top regional center for culture through its rich menu of arts programming and educational services. More than 90,000 people are served by the Center each year through professional performances, student learning activities and community programs.
The cornerstone of the Performing Arts Center is the annual Professional Performing Arts Series. The Series was created to bring a high level of accessible world-class entertainment to the community at large. Throughout its 45-year history, QPAC has successfully produced over 1,100 performances and served over 1 million individuals in its intimate 875-seat theater. QPAC is strongly committed to expanding public access to the arts for everyone. The center’s affordable prices allow Queens’ working families, younger generations and seniors the opportunity to enjoy first-rate performances locally. The performances are of the highest quality and QPAC strives to offer multicultural entertainment that mirrors the diversity of the borough.
The Center is also a learning laboratory that provides many cultural and artistic opportunities to the College’s students. QCC faculty have the unique opportunity of integrating the center and its resources in a number of creative ways, into the courses they teach, deepening and enriching student learning in the process. While students studying the arts may seem like the most natural fit for this type of participatory learning, the presenting artists, many of whom hail from the farthest corners of the world, enable real-life lessons in sociology, history, language, health, education, finance, physical therapy, and physics, not to mention the more obvious connections in the areas of theatre, dance, music, photography and marketing. For those individuals studying theatre, students work on-site and train in the areas of theatre production, technical stagecraft, scenic design and lighting as well as stage management and theatre administration.
Queensborough Community College utilizes QPAC for its nursing school graduations, citizenship ceremonies, new student orientations, theater productions, music concerts and more. Non-profit organizations and other community groups depend upon the space for concerts, graduations, dance recitals, cultural performances, seminars and community events.
