Grammar And Middle School Students Enrolled in The QCC Kids and Teens Summer Academy at a Special Q&A with President Christine Mangino

The QCC Kids and Teens Summer Academy is a newly designed program being offered through the College’s Continuing Education Office.

Under the leadership of Yang Xu, the academy director, the program combines academic learning experiences with other enrichment classes including, yoga, ukulele, Python, Tae Kwando, arts and crafts, drawing, board games, as well as Chinese recital, Math, ELA and Chinese second language classes.

This summer’s program ran Monday through Friday from 9am until 5pm.  There were 82 grammar and middle school students enrolled. To cap off the summer program, the kids and teens were treated to a special Q&A with the President of Queensborough Community College, Dr. Christine Mangino.

Being on a college campus allows students to take advantage of all the campus facilities, including classrooms, the athletic field, the track, and gym.  Lunch service is also available.  This year students were given tours of the QCC Art Gallery and Kurt R. Schmeller Library.

“A typical day in our program consists of morning academic classes and afternoon activities.  Our kids range from 5- to 12-year-old.  We encourage learning as well as being a team player.  Our students help each other and learn from one another.  This program has been extremely rewarding to me leading my first summer program.” Yang Xu

“The QCC Kids and Teen’s Summer Program has been an extraordinary experience in my life,” said Judi Belle Raines, an instructor in Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). “It has provided a variety of valuable resources for children offering them the opportunity to grow and learn in a nurturing setting.” Raines mentioned that her mother, Belle, also had a connection to Queensborough, serving as secretary for several years to the late Queensborough President, Kurt R. Schmeller.

The Program ended on the 18th of August. To read more about the Kids and Teens Summer Academy, please click on the link below:
