Asian Heritage Month
Please join us in celebrating the Asian Heritage Month this April by exploring the resources that highlight aspects of Asian culture and tradition.
The Asian Heritage Month Celebration was initiated in 1990 with a goal to increase cultural awareness within our diverse college community. Over the years, this annual event had included Asian dance, music, food, and Asian arts and crafts. This year, the committee on Asian Heritage Celebration has coordinated several virtual and hybrid events for Queensborough's students, faculty, and staff. See the events for April 2023

Description: Join us in getting centered, first through our bodies and then, hopefully through our minds, as we practice a set of mindfulness techniques to help become more aware, as well as more compassionate and empathic. The event will begin with a brief introduction to mindfulness as a practice and then move into a discussion of Claudia Rankine’s purpose in creating her poetry collection, and conclude with the ways in which we can consider using compassion in our world today.
Arts in the Muslim World: Henna; Wed, April 6; 12:15 – 1:15 pm; Humanities Bldg 207 (In Person)
Description: This event is part one form of Artistic expressions in the Muslim world. In this event, the speaker will discuss how Muslims, especially women, would apply henna in many celebrations including Eid and wedding.

Description: This one-hour event will briefly introduce the history and components of Cantonese Opera as well as its social influence. The presenter will prepare multiple related videos for presentation and explanation. Mr. Andrew Guo, the presenter, has been studying and practicing Chinese opera for years. He has written drama lyrics, created and performed Cantonese opera in some folk Cantonese opera groups.
Solidarity Now! Creating Awareness of Anti-Asian Racism; 4/11/2022. Virtual, 4pm-6 pm
Description: The rise in anti-Asian violence and discrimination is very concerning. In response, Asian American Faculty and Staff Association, the Asian Heritage Month Committee, and Student Activities are organizing this event to raise awareness and discuss solidarity and support for the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. Guest speakers, including Congresswoman Grace Meng, and others from our CUNY community will present and panelists will respond and answer audience questions while Dr. Chang and the Asian Heritage Month Committee will moderate the question-answer session.

But art and meditation are both mysterious and hard to grasp for some. In this workshop, Lulu Meng will share her personal journey in art and meditation followed by an interactive practice in a simple approach to meditation and art.

Join us for a celebration event co-sponsored by the Asian Heritage Month Committee, Thrive Series, and the Creative Writing Club. In this interactive event, we will read the poetry of Kabir and other mystical poets and explore writing Doha, “a form common to Hindi verse that consists of rhyming couplets made up of twenty-four syllables each” (poets.org). Join us as we explore the wisdom, joy and power of Doha and discover what writing in this form can teach us.

Indonesian Musical Instrument: Angklung: A short presentation to introduce Angklung and the two Indonesian children songs followed by live performance
Celebrating Multilingualism at QCC: Join us in celebrating National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month by sharing your experiences being bilingual or multilingual. QCC’s student body speaks over 100 different languages, and this project will celebrate our language diversity through videos and a gigantic banner that documents the experiences of multilingual students, staff and faculty. Students will work in their classes to prepare short interview videos and messages that they’d like to share on our QCC Multilingualism Banner. Throughout the first two weeks of April, students may showcase the interviews and creation of multilingual messages in online events as well as a banner-scribing party booth at the Asian Heritage Month Festival on April 27.
