Serve, Set, Spike! The QCC Lady Tigers are Declared the 2013 CUNY Volleyball Champions

Published: October 24, 2013

On Monday, October 21st, the crowd at Hostos Community College went wild as the Queensborough Community College Lady Tigers defeated the Kingsborough Community College Wave, finishing the fourth set at 25-13 to be declared the 2013 CUNY Volleyball Champions.

The Lady Tigers had won two of the last three titles against the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers and the Hostos Community College Caimans. This is Queensborough’s third Women’s Volleyball Championship title in four years.

“We came out with so much momentum in the fourth set that I knew nothing could stop us,” said Jason Demas, the Lady Tigers Head Coach who was named the 2013 CUNY Volleyball Coach of the Year. He also earned CUNY Volleyball Coach of the Year honors in 2011.  “Queensborough has one of the strongest and deepest (star starters) women’s volleyball teams in the region. The fact that our players came together against such talented teams as Hostos, BMCC and Kingsborough is a tribute to the caliber of all the players.”

“It really is unbelievable,” said Sabrina Rodriguez, named All-Star both this year and in 2011. “We really just needed to come together and play volleyball, and we did it!”

In addition to Ms. Rodriguez, the following Lady Tiger Volleyball Athletes have been awarded CUNY Athletic Conference Honors for 2013: Angelica Mae Aquino, Player of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player; Carmen Clavijo, All-Tournament Team; Luverie Lumbera, All-Star and All-Tournament Team; and Raluca Mosora, Rookie of the Year.
