Arthur FlugDr. Arthur Flug, Executive Director of the Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives at Queensborough Community College, received the 11th Annual Claire Shulman Award at the 90th Annual Queensboro Council for Social Welfare event on October 26.

"I am so grateful to accept this award on behalf of the College, our students and our survivors," said Dr. Flug, who was honored for his outstanding community service leadership.

After teaching in the public school system for 30 years, Dr. Flug embarked upon a career that included constituent services, budget design, legislative development, fundraising, and community relations.

Dr. Flug added, "It wasn't until I came to Queensborough that I understood what involvement really means. The College's diverse student body brings their varied life experiences to their education and to me that makes all the difference."

The Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives offers thousands of visitors access to major exhibits, a library of Holocaust-themed books and a collection of audio tapes preserving the testimony of local Holocaust survivors.

To ensure that survivors are not forgotten, an internship program was established in 2007 through which students learn about moral dilemmas and why it is important to become informed citizens on both local and global issues. Beginning in the fall of 2012, an Asian internship program was launched for students to learn about the victims of aggression in Asia during World War II. The program is co-sponsored by Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE).

Internship applications from students of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and academic disciplines have tripled at the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives since the program's inception.

Other Community Leadership honorees were the Honorable Claire Shulman; Mr. Kwang S. Kim; and James E. Satterfield, M.D., Past President, Medical Society, County of Queens. The Government Leadership awards went to Queens Borough President, Helen M. Marshall; and New York City Council Members Leroy G. Comrie; James Gennaro; Karen Koslowitz; Eric Ulrich; Peter Vallone, Jr., and Mark Weprin.
