Faculty Vacancy Announcement:
Performs teaching and related faculty functions in area(s) of expertise.
As a community college in the CUNY system, our students primarily take general education and lower division courses for university transfer. Contractual teaching load is 27 contact hours for the academic year (4 to 5 course sections per semester); summer teaching is optional. The successful candidate will teach lectures and labs in various General Chemistry courses, Chemistry and the Arts, and possibly Organic Chemistry. In addition, faculty are expected to participate in departmental and college activities including committees, course and program assessment, and curriculum development, and also to provide academic support and advisement for students during the semester and as part of the registration process. For faculty in the Lecturer rank, exemplary teaching is required for reappointment and promotion. Some evening or weekend teaching may be required. Position to start fall 2014 semester.
The Chemistry Department offers Associate Degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences, a Dual/Joint A.S. degree in Science for Forensics (Queensborough)/B.S. in Forensic Science (John Jay College of Criminal Justice), as well as a Dual/Joint A.S. degree in Chemistry/B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences between Queensborough and York College. In addition to its four teaching labs, the Chemistry Department has modern laboratory facilities for faculty-student research, including two well-equipped instrumentation labs. Our research students routinely make oral and poster presentations at local, regional, and national ACS conferences. The department provides opportunities for growth, including research, grant writing, and improvements in pedagogy. Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.
Preferred qualifications include: 1) college level teaching experience in Chemistry, with a strong preference for community college teaching and demonstrated experience teaching general chemistry lectures and labs; 2)interests in teaching/learning innovation; 3) experience using instructional technology; 4) experience with student-centered and high-impact pedagogy (see http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/academies/high-impact-practices.html);5)experience with course and/or program assessment; and 6) experience teaching diverse college student populations.
