 Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.


The Chemistry Department at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY) is accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor with expertise in any area of chemistry to begin in the spring 2014 semester.  Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience in organic chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lectures and labs in introductory and the full-year organic chemistry sequence, as well as various general chemistry courses. In addition, faculty are expected to conduct original research and mentor undergraduate students; provide academic advisement and assistance to students during the semester and as part of the registration process; participate in Departmental and College activities including committees, curriculum development, and assessment; and seek and obtain external funding for research. Continued scholarly activities and publications are required for tenure and promotion. The successful candidate may be required to teach some evening and/or weekend classes. Summer teaching is available.


The Chemistry Department has up-to-date laboratory facilities for faculty-student research, including three research/instrumentation labs (90MHz FT-NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, Radial Chromatography (Chromatotron), UV-Vis, FT-IR, Elemental Analyzer (CHN), SEM, X-ray fluorescence, Polarimeter, Microwave Reactor, Flash Chromatography System), as well as four teaching labs. Our research students routinely make oral and poster presentations at local, regional, and national ACS conferences. We offer Associate Degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences and a Dual/Joint A.S. degree in Science for Forensics (Queensborough)/B.S. in Forensic Science (John Jay College of Criminal Justice).  Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.


The successful candidate will have a Doctorate in Chemistry and demonstrated experience teaching organic chemistry and general chemistry lectures and labs, conducting research with undergraduates, and working with diverse populations. A plan for ongoing research with undergraduates is expected. A record of recent publication in peer-reviewed journals is preferred, as is experience in the operation and routine maintenance of chemical instrumentation. Hands-on experience with a variety of laboratory instruments is highly desirable.  


 Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
