Honors Program

The Honors Program at QCC is an academic program where students can do advanced academic work to distinguish themselves from their peers. Students can earn Honors notations on their transcripts for individual courses and work towards becoming an Honors Scholar by graduation.

What’s In It for Me?

Honors students can cultivate closer relationships with their professors, explore career paths and areas of academic interest, and produce portfolio-worthy projects. These factors, in turn, help students develop a strong resume and transcript, connect to faculty who can write letters of recognition, and develop work samples that can be used in future applications. Honors students position themselves to be stronger candidates for internships, jobs, scholarships, and transfer to four-year colleges and even graduate programs. Major benefits include:

  • Smaller classes with fellow Honors students, taught by the some QCC’s best faculty
  • Honors recognition on your transcript, your diploma, and at the graduation ceremony
  • Honors students are able to forge strong connections to faculty mentors, build their professional and academic network, and often connect to internships, study abroad, and research opportunities that help them further distinguish themselves from other students
  • Professional development, networking, and cultural/social activities throughout the year for Honors Students

How Does It Work?

Generally speaking, students can earn Honors credit in three different ways:

  1. Enrolling in an all-Honors course section
  2. Completing an Honors Contract– think of it as an extra-credit project – for a non-Honors course in which you are currently enrolled
  3. Joining a voluntary Honors workshop accompanying specific courses: MA 440 and BI 201 ONLY (must be currently enrolled to participate)

Students who earn 12 or more hours of Honors credit and graduate with a 3.40 (or higher) GPA are recognized as Honors Scholars at graduation. This includes:

  • A special Honors Certificate
  • Honors notation on your diploma
  • Recognition as an Honors Scholar during the annual commencement ceremony
  • A permanent notation on your transcript that you graduated as an Honors Scholar

Who Qualifies:

ANYONE with 9 or more QCC credits and a GPA of 3.0

  • Incoming students without a QCC GPA can qualify based on CUNY placement exam scores or Regent’s Exam scores
  • All students in BI-201 or MA-440 are eligible to earn Honors credit by attending voluntary workshops in addition to the regular class sessions
  • Committed students with high aptitude and a strong recommendation from a faculty member or other professional can seek a GPA requirement exemption

If I Qualify, Am I Automatically Enrolled?

No. To be in the Honors program, you must complete some type of Honors academic coursework – either enroll in an Honors section, join a BI-201 or MA-440 Honors Workshop, or complete an Honors Contract.

All Honors work must be completed in addition to regular course requirements and must be completed in accordance with Honors standards and CUNY's Policy of Academic Integrity. Attendance at an Honors Library Workshop is mandatory for all students pursuing an Honors Contract (unless done so previously in a prior semester) in order to receive Honors credit. Students who meet these requirements will receive a notation of Honors on their college transcript next to the appropriate course. To graduate with an Honors certificate a student must have completed a minimum of 12 Honors credits and have an overall GPA of 3.40. Honors certificate graduates are recognized at the annual commencement ceremony as well as with a notation on both their transcripts and diplomas.

CETL will be providing guidance for Faculty to teach or participate in Honors Classes and Honors Contracts, which will be held 10 am to 12 noon in CETL Lab L313 on Friday, September 15th.

Research 101 Workshops

Any student completing an Honors Contract for the first time must also complete a Research 101 Certificate Class offered by the QCC Library in order to receive honors credit. Lasting about one hour, the one-session class is offered at different times so students can choose the time that works best for their schedule.
