QUEENSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE LAUNCHES NEW GALLERY AND MUSEUM STUDIES PROGRAM, RAISING THE BAR ON ARTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Bayside, New York, August 6, 2008 – Boasting an Art Gallery with an extensive, permanent African Art collection and a sophisticated research library, Queensborough Community College (QCC) is now offering students of the new Gallery and Museum Studies Program an opportunity to study in an environment of rare and world-class art.
“Queensborough is the only college in the New York City area to offer an introductory level program leading to an Associate of Science in Gallery and Museum Studies,” says Dr. Eduardo J. Martí, President of Queensborough Community College. “Part of our mission at Queensborough is to provide our students a well-rounded education which includes exposure to the arts.”
In fact, the collection of art at Queensborough has attracted the attention of such notable art critics as Holland Cotter of The New York Times who wrote of the QCC Art Gallery, “Queensborough Community College has quietly assembled an impressive collection of African Art…With luck, other university galleries around the country will emulate it.”
Through Queensborough’s new Gallery and Museum Studies program, the community college student will now have the opportunity to enter into a career in Museum Studies. The A.S. degree in Gallery and Museum Studies is fully transferable to other CUNY colleges, where the student may continue his or her studies and earn a Bachelor of Arts in Art History. The program offers students foundation courses in administration, conservation and curatorial work in art galleries and museums, and liberal arts courses necessary for the gallery and museum field. The Department of Art and Photography has extensive course offerings in art history, studio art, photography, and graphic, commercial and video art, and offers curricula in art, photography, and digital art and design.
At Queensborough, students will enjoy studying in a suburban, private campus environment, where visual and performing arts flourish. In addition to its visual art offerings, Queensborough offers a full complement of theatre, dance and music programs that are taught by faculty members who are highly trained in their field of study. In fact, nearly 60% of Queensborough faculty hold a doctorate, compared to only 25% in community colleges overall.
In addition to the QCC Art Gallery, Queensborough provides other cultural & historical resources to the community at large which serve as learning laboratories for students. The Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC), now in it 43rd year, offers a wide-range of star-studded music, dance, opera and children’s shows each academic year. Many students participate in theatrical productions through internships at QPAC. The Harriet and Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives is another unique resource to the community and students alike, providing education about the tragic consequences of prejudice, racism and stereotyping. Students are able to study Holocaust history through original exhibits custom-designed for the Center, or volunteer as an intern to learn the lessons of the Holocaust first-hand from a survivor.
New York City is a world center for the arts and Queensborough Community College, a college of The City University of New York, is proud to be able to offer its students a unique opportunity to take the first step toward a career in Museum Studies.
