Congratulations to Vincent Stigliano, David Lieberman, Paul Marchese, Stuart Asser and Todd Holden for a new three-year $724,000 grant from the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program. 

This grant is for the Technology Academy at Queensborough.  It will support activities such as a summer immersion program, personalized academic advisement, specialized blocked and linked courses (learning communities), tutoring and writing intensive courses, all of which will facilitate close interaction between students and faculty, adjuncts and staff throughout students' academic career.

Congratulations to Mary Ann Rosa, Cheryl Spencer, Tricia Burke and Margaret Reilly from the Nursing Department for a new $35,000 CUNY Workforce Development Initiative (WDI) grant for “Integrating Technology into the Health Care Workforce.”  This project is a combination of faculty development workshops to integrate technology into the curriculum and expansion of the new Virtual Hospital to include high fidelity simulations and incorporate PDAs.

Congratulations to the following CUNY Community College Collaborative Research Incentive grantees for the 2007-2008 academic year:

  • Eugene Harris and Chong Jue - $29,935 for “Adaptations for Malaria-Resistance in Primate Evolution:  An Analysis of the Gene Encoding the Duffy Erythrocye Antigen in Old World Monkeys”
  • Alex Flamholz and George Tremberger - $26,250 for “Fractal analysis of time resolved diffusive medium speckle patterns with application for mammogram architectural distortion investigation”
  • Cheryl Bluestone and Virginia Cowen - $29,880 for “Predictors and Mechanisms of Cardiovascular Risk Profiles in Children and Adolescents: An Exploratory Study Using the NICHD SECC Longitudinal Data Base”
  • Monica Trujillo and her Hunter College Collaborator, Akira Kawamura - $30,000 for “Assessing the Microbial Diversity of New York State Soils”
  • Sharon Lall-Ramnarine and her Kingsborough Community College collaborator, Catherine McEntee - $30,000 for “Dissecting the Mechanism of Ionic Liquid Antimicrobial Activity:  A Structure/Function & Genetic Analysis”

Congratulations to Queensborough Community College's PSC-CUNY grantees for the upcoming fiscal year!

Thirty seven Queensborough faculty members have been awarded a total of $149,550 to support research across 16 different disciplines. [April 20, 2007]

The Professional Staff Congress-City University of New York (PSC-CUNY) Research Award Program encourages and supports faculty research and helps leverage external grant funding. Awards are distributed by the University Committee on Research Awards, a faculty committee, and administered by the Research Foundation of CUNY.

This year, 37 faculty members at Queensborough received PSC-CUNY grants totaling $149,550 to support their research across 16 different disciplines. The faculty members and their departments are listed here:

Congratulations to Maureen Wallace for a $12,000 Verizon Foundation grant to support the Nursing Department's new "virtual hospital," which provides nursing students with the opportunity to develop their critical thinking and clinical practice skills using life-like mannequins programmed to mimic a variety of clinical situations.

Congratulations to Paul Jean-Pierre and Sherri-Ann Simmons-Terry for receiving a new grant in the amount of $250,687 from the NYS Education Department to continue Project PRIZE here at Queensborough.

New Grant from the National Science Foundation

Congratulations to Principal Investigator Paul Marchese and co-P.I.'s Cheryl Bluestone, George Tremberger, Haishen Yao and Tak David Cheung for a new $1,050,310 grant from the National Science Foundation to establish "A Laser Academy for High School Science Teachers.” More...

This three-year grant will support the Physics Department's efforts to build on the success of the Laser Academy for high school students.  The new academy for teachers will increase opportunities to learn about, experience and use information technologies within the context of photonics, and help ameliorate the shortage of technology-qualified teachers in the New York City area.

Queensborough is also part of new five-year $3.46 million collaborative grant with John Jay College , which was recently funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program (Title V).  This project will develop both colleges' capacity to address cross-institutional needs in retention and graduation rates of Hispanic students in the sciences and among non-native English speaking students.  Congratulations to Vice President Mark McColloch who worked with John Jay College to secure this new grant.

Congratulations to Principal Investigator Patricia Schneider on her new $561,653 three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP).  This funding will launch and support a program to recruit and provide under-represented minority students with research opportunities across the sciences as well as faculty mentoring.

Congratulations to David Sarno and Moni Chauhan from the Chemistry Department and Roland Scal from the Department of Biological Sciences and Geology for their new $70,844 grant from the NSF's Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program.  Funding will support the acquisition of a tabletop scanning electron microscope for undergraduate research in materials chemistry and geological science as well as science activities for students in grades 7-12.  Joan Petersen, Simran Sehmi and Bob Kueper also contributed to the proposal and will be involved in program activities.

Congratulations to Lana Zinger, Alicia Sinclair and Andrea Salis in the Health, Physical Education and Dance Department for their new $5,000 grant from the Dairy Council. They will be training volunteer students at Benjamin Cardozo High School to serve as peer educators and encourage good nutrition that helps increase athletic performance, control weight and decrease future risks of developing osteoporosis.  The project will reach approximately 200 students.

Congratulations to Paul Marchese for a new $6,120 grant award from NASA.  As part of NASA Goddard's Space Flight Center's New York City Research Initiative, Paul will mentor a team consisting of one high school student and one undergraduate, who will conduct research on the composition of solar wind and participate in enrichment experiences.
