Men's Basketball: Queensborough vs. Rockland CC (2/1/12)

Date: February 1st, 2012
Duration: 1h:28m:42s

With Queensborough needing a win in a crucial Region XV game, the Rockland Hawks came into Bayside and won 71-68. The Tigers trailed for the entire second half, after ending the first half poorly.

Stephon Medard, and Taequann Washington carried the early scoring load, including a four-point play from Washington. A basket by Jason Lawrence gave QCC a 24-18 lead with 6:21 remaining in the first half. It would be the last time Queensborough would score until after halftime. Rockland scored the last dozen points of the half, going up 30-24.

The Hawks would extend their lead to double digits, and had the Tigers going to Medard to bail out the offense. The Tigers rallied and a bucket by Alan Smith made it 62-58 with under two minutes to play. The Hawks caught the defense napping and Tommie Starkes scored at the other end and was fouled to make it 65-58. Moments later QCC’s Davin Miner made it 68-65 with a three, but again the Tigers defense went to sleep and gave up a back-breaking lay-up.

The loss virtually eliminated the Tigers from the Region XV Playoffs, and they had Rockland point guard Tommie Starkes to thank. Starkes killed Queensborough with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists.
