Starting with Honors Courses as an Incoming Freshman
By HaEun Kim
During the Fall 2015 semester I registered as an incoming student in Honors CH-151 and started conducting research under Dr. Jun Shin of the Chemistry Department. I was very nervous about going through all these experiences, but I was more excited about having all these good opportunities in my first semester. Dr. Paris Svoronos in Honors General Chemistry I recommended that I start conducting research. During the course I had great support from Dr. Svoronos who encouraged me to go to the board to solve problems and explain my answer to the rest of the class so that I can improve my English. In my research project I had to determine the refractive index of solid mixtures using a laser. I presented the findings to the rest of the Chemistry Department in December. This was a great beginning for me as I am scheduled to make presentations at several American Chemical Conferences in both the spring and summer, including the National American Chemical Society Meeting in Philadelphia. I am registered to take more Honors STEM classes in the spring and intend to take even more in the future.
